As a PhD student, my supervisor never answered my emails. Then I became a PhD supervisor and realised why A thread🧵 of my mistakes and how to avoid them #phdchat #AcademicTwitter

After nearly 4 yrs, 4 house moves, 4 p/t jobs, 2 thesis extensions, marriage, becoming a dad, and a raging global pandemic, today I successfully defended my PhD! Would not have been possible without 3 incredible supervisors at @AstonPsychology #AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter

When reviewers 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 all hate the paper but it still gets published.

Happy this is almost out there, led by the powerhouse @drcpennington. The typesetting isn't quite finished yet, but you can read an open access version of the accepted article here: osf.io/s84ra/

For those in academia who don't understand the fuss over the Super League. Imagine if Nature, Science and Cell prioritized research from a select bunch of PIs. Oh, wait...

@CraccoEmiel @AstonPsychology @CEITEC_Brno If we do indeed (mentally) rotate our hand to match the stim (not vice versa), then yes - mapping might be easier for 90- than 90+ rotations (end-state hypothesis). But why does R+90 (anatomically compatible) cause -CE?

@DanShawJ @AstonPsychology @CEITEC_Brno Wrt anatomical mapping: assuming ppl try to mirror the stimulus hand (which at least I do intuitively), left hand -90 is easiest to map on own hand and +90 potentially most difficult bc it requires an awkward rightward twist of own right hand.

@CraccoEmiel @AstonPsychology @CEITEC_Brno Thanks for you’re interest - we were hoping for your feedback on this paper. You’re absolutely right - CE+ for the R+90 stim implies that “residual imitative effects remained for this stimulus... a phenomenon that polarity correspondence alone cannot explain.” 1/2

@DanShawJ @AstonPsychology @CEITEC_Brno Interesting. This is based on a cursory reading (plan to read in full later!), so apologies if addressed in the paper, but doesn't a +CE in -90 R-hand trials suggest AI > spatial for the ctr-clockwise rotation? And what do you think is the influence of ease of anatomical mapping?

Miguel Salazar @CEITEC_Brno isn't on Twitter, but he deserves some recognition for his first paper. It's been a long time coming, but he's managed to produce something very special here! doi.org/10.1016/j.neur… @AstonPsychology , is there an official term for a non-Tweeter?

New paper by myself, @DanShawJ and our wonderful research students. I'm super proud of this paper for so many reasons. It was my first pre-registered study with a lot of thought going into the method and design. I learnt a LOT & it made me realise how important prereg is! (1/X)

Right now (live!) in the Greenhill lab we’re making patch clamp recordings from organotypic cultures of brain tissue from juvenile epilepsy patients, helping us understand hard-to-treat epilepsy and come up with new drugs. Courtesy of funding from @acmedsci and @Bham_Childrens
