Big sleeper in jobs figures today is that 17pc of the people who are still working in SA want more hours. A struggle for them that ripples through everything as less cash goes into the corner store.

Largest monthly fall in employment in Australian history and rising unemployment not the full story. Very high rate of underemployment plus millions on JobKeeper masks reality that real level of unemployment and hardship is much higher in the nation.

@theTiser Number of SA people in work or looking for a job is lower than it has been since 2002. That keeps headline unemployment number down, despite large number of job losses.

@theTiser Oz rate also up a full percentage point, to 6.2pc. Jumps are lower than many were expecting, but don't take into account further losses this month. Also kept lower by JobKeeper payments.

Coronavirus crisis makes clear we need/ed a sovereign manufacturing capability strategy. Good to see group has been appointed by PM to begin that process. Much we can learn from other nations about centrality of manufacturing to national economic/social wellbeing and health.
