@theWellRedMage @joshcarlosjosh At least this and asking people to answer whether or not Boromir was a good man provide an easy litmus test for whether or not I should take their opinions seriously.

@joshcarlosjosh It's always peculiar to me that folk will say LOTR is a simple black-and-white tale when there's literally a central titular object that tempts people to cross and blur lines of black and white constantly.

Imagine so misunderstanding a story that the author says you must not have read it all or read it very thoroughly. This quote from the article about why LOTR is "difficult to watch today" (lol) is a criticism of Tolkien so old that he himself responded to the first versions of it! In letter 154, he says this sort of thinking is excusable in those who read LOTR "in a hurry," or had "only a fragment to read," and who have not read The Silmarillion (the "unpublished Elvish histories"). But Saruman, Boromir, and Denethor are all examples—identified by Tolkien himself—of characters who don't fit neatly into this "the heroes are always good and the villains are always evil" framework. Lord of the Rings is hardly a tale where the heroes are always good and the villains are always evil. Rather, it is a story where there are clear standards of morality external to the characters by which they (and also the readers) are able to evaluate the failures and achievements of the imperfect characters. "'How shall a man judge what to do in such times?,'" Éomer asks Aragorn in The Two Towers. "'As he ever has judged,’" Aragorn replies. "'Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man’s part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house.’"

Some of it IS when its antagonist wants to be worshipped as a god (Tolkien's own words) but obviously this kind of commentary is a ridiculous oversimplification designed for the internet age when rage clicks keep brands afloat. How to go viral but ruin your reputation.

.@JackPosobiec: Lord of the Rings is overtly pagan.

Today in RPG history... HAL Lab released Card Master: Rimusaria no Fuuin (AKA Arcana) on Mar 27, 1992. Japanese take on Western-style 1st-person dungeon crawling albeit with card-themed characters & enemies with a very high random encounter rate. 1st in-game appearance of Kirby!

@theWellRedMage I believe SE said themselves last year that they were going to double down on remakes/remasters for the new few years. Probably because they don't have faith in anyone there to be able to head up a new FF after XVI and the VII reimaginings.

Very interesting that every game on this list is a remake or remaster of some kind.

@kevinbolk No, Aang should be voiced by a SHAVED guy. If the dude is naturally bald, it won't sound right at all.

@theWellRedMage Chrono Cross has one of the best RPG soundtracks ever. So many excellent pieces like Another World, Bound by Fate, The Dead Sea, Scars of Time, and so on. All these years later and it's still one of my favorites.

Rovert will be the only Trevor standing in wrestling. No one else can handle the burden of this name. At birth it makes you say dumb things if you are also into wrestling. It's like feeding a Mogwai after midnight, a disastrous combination.

I'm sure a lot of people are weaponizing this and practicing phony outrage but saying you're glad someone suffers from a debilitating disease because they said your acting is bad is bringing a nuke to a knife fight. It ain't the move.

@discoque92 Book It was the only way I ever got Pizza Hut as a kid, we couldn't afford that. I think the strength of the program was that it wasn't just tied to classics, you had plenty of contemporary books across multiple genres. So for a kid into fantasy and sci-fi, had plenty of choices.

@orsonscottcard @thomas_garrard Created the character at 24, wrote the book at 33. That's reassuring. I don't feel like I've wasted my time now whenever I throw something out because I hate the story but like the character I'm working with.

Thanks for caring about a character I created when I was 24 and a book I wrote when I was 33. I'm old now, still trying to come up with truthful stories, and glad to know that you've taken Ender Wiggin to heart. @thomas_garrard *I’m also happy to see how many fellow humans have volunteered to replace Grok in a book discussion. **And speaking of being old, I first posted this incorrectly. Grok may have to replace me.
Just T.J. the Army Vet@thomas_garrard

I just had a conversation with Grok about one of my all time favorite books “Ender’s Game” I had to talk to Grok, because I’ve never met anyone who’s read it, besides me. Lol. It’s a great book, though, if you’re ever so inclined.

"Wow, phonics really works! We've achieved 99% literacy!" "Hey, I have a new theory on how to teach reading that's completely untested and based on nothing but vibes! It's called whole language learning!" "That's great! Fuck phonics, implement that new theory immediately!"

teaching degrees might be more justifiable if education departments were not liable to fall for every pop psychology scam that crosses their path.
