Delighted to receive copies of People as Protection (University of Pennsylvania Press). A heavy moment, though—recent attacks in Maiduguri are a stark reminder of how close violence remains. As David Pratten notes, we must not lose sight of the courage to resist Boko Haram.

#NLSPublicLecture NLSIU hosted a public lecture on ‘Temporary Lives: Law, Ruination, And The Right To Dwell In Lagos’ by Daniel E. Agbiboa, John & Ruth Hazel Associate Professor of the Social Sciences at Harvard University on January 12, 2026. Engaging with images and visual metaphors, the talk demonstrated how blueprint utopias render the lives of fisher communities permanently “temporary,” and examined the affective costs of such precarity. Situating Lagos within broader debates on climate urbanism, law, displacement, and urban citizenship, Daniel Agbiboa traced forms of political life that persist when law governs through dispossession. #NLSPublicLectures #NLSIU is organising a public lecture on ‘Temporary Lives: Law, Ruination, And The Right To Dwell In Lagos’ by @DanielAgbiboa, John & Ruth Hazel Associate Professor of the Social Sciences at @Harvard University. 🗓️Monday, January 12, 2026 ⏰5 PM 📍Allen & Overy Conference Hall, NLSIU Training Centre By bringing Lagos into conversation with broader debates on climate urbanism, law, displacement, and urban citizenship, the talk invites reflection on a pressing question for legal scholarship. What does justice look like when law itself governs through dispossession, and what forms of political life persist when redemption through law is no longer available? 👉This event is open to the public. The 2022 flood in Nigeria was devastating—killing >600, displacing >1.4M people. New research by @DanielAgbiboa reveals the human suffering in the wake of the flood and ties it to the logic of disaster as political instrument in Nigeria. loom.ly/vRYp9Kw 📸: NEMA via AP
