@VisionaryVoid I always enjoy seeing this story but something needs to be addressed, S. E. Haydon was not a judge, he was a cotton trader & occasional correspondent for the news. You are likely referring to “Judge Proctor”, who owned the windmill and property where the event allegedly occurred.

The 1897 Aurora, Texas UFO Crash In April 1897, a slow-moving airship reportedly crashed into a windmill on a farm in the tiny town of Aurora, Texas. The local judge, S.E. Haydon, wrote an account for the Dallas Morning News describing the explosion of the craft and the discovery of a non-human pilot among the debris. The townspeople gave the visitor a Christian burial in the local cemetery, with a small stone marker purportedly placed over the grave. The event became a foundational piece of Texas folklore, preceding the modern UFO era by decades. While skeptics dismissed it as a elaborate hoax orchestrated by Judge Haydon to save his failing town from being bypassed by the railroad, the legend persisted. For years, curiosity seekers visited the Aurora cemetery in search of the "alien grave," and some even claimed to have found metal fragments that did not belong to any known earthly alloy. Whether it was a celestial visitor or a brilliant marketing scheme, the Aurora incident captured the imagination of a nation on the cusp of the 20th century. To this day, the crash remains one of the most intriguing and debated stories in the history of unexplained aerial phenomena.

My brother Matthew & I had a great time at the 2026 Fouke Monster Festival! This was its 8th year and I’m honored to have run the A/V and MC for the event. We enjoyed seeing everyone, camping, and stopping by the legendary Boggy Creek in Fouke, Arkansas!

and although it never saved a dying town, the legend is now known worldwide. However real or hoaxed the event actually was, it has certainly put the town on the map and stills bringing curious minds to explore the folkloric and historic sites of Aurora and its legend.

but Haydon’s report remained dormant for the better part of a century, until the late 1960’s, when curious explorers sought to uncover the reality behind the tale. Haydon moved to California soon after his story was published and never came to know about the publicity it gained,

129 years ago, April 19th, 1897, the Dallas Morning News contained several reports of a mysterious airship from all over Texas in a section called “The Great Aerial Wanderer”, featuring a story from Aurora called “A Windmill Demolishes It.” by S. E. Haydon (Samuel Edwin Haydon).
