Catholic family altars are made and sold in Japan. To anyone familiar with Buddhist family altars, the form is recognizable: polished wood, doors, and a central sacred space. But the meaning is different. Christ crucified is at the center of the Catholic altar. There is no ancestral tablet. The dead are remembered before God, not given a continuing place in the household as ancestors. When I die, I hope I will be remembered that way.

The Church does not lose her witness merely because society becomes more secular. She loses her witness when she forgets who she is. As other traditions have learned, people seek not trendier churches but transcendence, holiness and a mission or purpose.
