A few weeks into our one year of funded Mandarin language study in Taiwan! We feel extremely blessed to be given the chance to learn a language that we've yearned to acquire, all while living and breathing it in a very special place. To a year of Chinese, tea, and badminton!

Ai Weiwei was invited to contribute short reflections on “What I would have liked to know about Germany earlier" for an upcoming issue of ZEITmagazin. His submission was shortened, edited, then cancelled after a review by the Executive Editor. Ai shared his reflections anyway:

"Living in Gaza now requires a choreography of absence. We don’t walk; we drift. We don’t eat; we search. We don’t sleep; we remain alert, ears tuned to the sound that will send us running. Survival is a ritual of adaptation in a world that offers none." e-flux.com/notes/6783383/…

As a South African born intellectual who grew up seeing his Wretched of the Earth on my families bookshelves before I knew what this work meant, he has been a source of revolutionary courage against the endless horrors of colonialism and capitalism in the present

His clear sighted denunciation of the inhuman barbarity of colonialism, not just in print but by joining the FLN, is a lesson to us all that commitments must be coupled w/ action, no matter the personal costs & without shying away from being branded–as is common today–terrorists

Frantz Fanon would have been 100 years old today! Although I love his two classic works, Black Skin, White Masks and The Wretched of the Earth, I encourage you all, on his birthday no less, to get to know Fanon better. Read his letters, psychiatric writings, speeches and plays!

It's exhilarating to see de Beauvoir's existentialism getting taken seriously again. Since reading Ethics of Ambiguity in my undergraduate years, I have been convinced of its centrality for navigating the complexities of political and personal life, despite fashionable criticisms

thrilled to run an excerpt from Free Gifts in the new @NewLeftReview asking what freedom might mean if we stop treating nature as a free gift

Additionally, a nice upshot of this dating is that the recollections of Hegel's sister, Christiane Hegel, about her brother are vindicated as true, contrary to the prevailing tendency to dismiss or entirely ignore them

Reference to generalities such as his being educated in the 'spirit of the Enlightenment' simply does not get us close to thinking about the concrete processes of knowledge transfer and inculturation which shaped the professional and intellectual identities of pupils like Hegel

My article makes a contribution to the learned debate about when Hegel began to attend the Stuttgart Gymnasium Illustre. This debate has been hampered by shoddy biographical research, autobiographical inconsistencies in records, and oftentimes contradictory historical evidence

When I set about seriously investigating Hegel's youth in Stuttgart, Hegel-Studien–the scientific journal attached to the Hegel-Archiv & the modern critical edition project–served as an indispensable treasure trove for my research It's an honour to now be published in its pages!
