@CoryMSimon @CoryMSimon thank you! Your u(t) response is not a discontinuity, but a non-zero initial move from the controller (and physically realizable). The cont. signal is received by an actuator, which would have its own dynamics (but these can be fast). Will follow up over email.

I showed my class your Tweet and explained how/why the manipulated variable should also be considered when defining 'optimal' control! 😀 great point, I should incl. the manipulated variable in this animation as well. v2 attached! (the changes in the manipulated variable do not seem too excessive, besides the [arguably] un-physical discontinuity at time zero).

@CoryMSimon I can think of two “categories” of ChE courses: 1. Any course that focuses exclusively on the steady-state (a “figment of the imagination”, in the words of the late Babatunde Ogunnaike). 2. Any course that does not have a meaningful computational component.

@CoryMSimon @CoryMSimon , anyone saying process control would be foolish…they would certainly be unaware of industrial and social realities that require understanding and addressing change over time.

no one may dare to say 'process control', since I teach that class. 🤭

@CoryMSimon @CoryMSimon, the manipulated variable (which in your example could very well be a valve position that sets the inlet flow q(t)) can be subject to "wear and tear" and other operating restrictions that have their own set of specs. I will email you an example used in my classes.

@DanielERivera19 I see---like, placing bounds on the manipulated input, penalizing its rate of change because it puts attrition on the control element, penalizing opening the valve because the liquid costs $, etc.? please send me notes on an example functional if you have one!

🏆 today's process control class is a competition! $50 Chipotle gift card for the winning team. I give time series data characterizing the impulse response of the process. students then design a PI controller for making set point changes. I'll score each team via a time-integral of the error of the closed-loop response to a set point change with their PI controller params. (I possess the true transfer function model; they do not.)

As of today, I was promoted to Full Professor & Interim Associate Dean for Community Partnerships @UCSD's HW School of Public Health Funny how excited I felt when getting tenure/assoc prof and how self-conscious I feel sharing full prof/assoc dean (Imposter syndrome)

I am glad to share the news that I will be promoted to associate professor with tenure at @ASU starting in fall 2021. This is really a team effort with the tremendous support from my family, current and former students, colleagues, and the university. Thank you very much! (1/2)

I would like to share the notice of my upcoming "Mind the Gap" webinar later this month, organized by the NIH Office of Disease Prevention. This webinar complements the one presented by friend and collaborator Eric Hekler @ehekler in June of 2019. prevention.nih.gov/education-trai…

@SBMPresident @BehavioralMed I think the SBM Board of Directors has made the right decision; there is too much uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 to allow for an effective face-to-face meeting. Starting to plan now for a virtual meeting is a prudent action, in my opinion.
