One thing Congressmembers can do to support press freedom and human rights -- and rein in abuse of the law to target journalists and whistleblowers -- is to cosponsor the Daniel Ellsberg Press Freedom and Whistleblower Protection Act, introduced by Rep @RashidaTlaib.

Rep. @RashidaTlaib introduces the Daniel Ellsberg Act to stop Espionage Act abuse against dissent
Abusive secrecy prevents us from being able to hold leaders accountable. Thank you @RepRashida for standing up for the free press, for whistleblowers, and for the First Amendment!

My foreword to a new posthumous collection of writings by my father, DANIEL ELLSBERG: "Truth and Consequence: Reflections on Catastrophe, Civil Resistance, and Hope" (Bloomsbury). This is my best reflection of what he was about--a message for today.

Today is the release of "Truth and Consequence: Reflections on Catastrophe, Civil Resistance, and Hope," a book of previously unpublished writing by Daniel Ellsberg. It was co-edited by his son @MichaelEllsberg and his longtime assistant, Jan R. Thomas.
Published by @BloomsburyBooks, the writings span from 1971-2021, and feature autobiographical and moral essays. The core of the book consists of selections from his nearly 100 boxes of handwritten notebooks, now housed at @scua_umass.
Few people could read Dan's inscrutable handwriting, but fortunately, Jan was one of them. She painstakingly went through these notebooks, selected the most captivating and prescient passages, transcribed them, and now they're accessible to the world.
The book captures Daniel's lifelong preoccupations with the problem of evil, the massacre of civilians, the threat of nuclear annihilation, the dangers of unquestioned obedience, and how to find hope through it all.

A new book culled from Daniel Ellsberg’s personal writings and archives: Truth and Consequence: Reflections on Catastrophe, Civil Resistance, and Hope

"Be very skeptical of all arguments to go to war, or to torture, massacre, or mass-imprison—even if, or especially if, for "humanitarian" reasons.
Above all, be very skeptical if you are asked to go to war for freedom, democracy, or regime change."

"The Constitution doesn’t provide for a delegation of open-ended, indefinite powers to the president to decide on war and peace. The Constitution is very explicitly and clearly intended to give the power of going to war entirely, exclusively to Congress. Not that they should be consulted, not that they should share it with the president. But that they alone, it says, should declare war, not the president. And by declaring war, they meant going to war in any circumstances other than an immediate attack on our forces."

Daniel Ellsberg, speaking at a protest at Livermore Lab, CA, Nagasaki Day, 8/9/17 (link below).
At the end of this speech from 2017, Daniel quotes what he said when getting arrested on the tracks at Rocky Flats, Nagasaki Day, thirty-nine years earlier, 8/9/78:
"'There shouldn't be business as usual designing plutonium type weapons of the kind that destroyed Nagasaki and are now triggers, on Nagasaki day, without having to arrest Americans to do it. You're going to do it over our bodies on this day [1978].' And that's what we're saying today. Thank you for being here. [2017]" ⬇️
