I really like the GWR livery, and would be happy with something like that. I’m not saying there must be a flag on the livery.
But that’s the design GBR opted for, and as I said having an opinion on the livery is legitimate, but crying jingoism over red, white and blue and a flag inspired design is a bit over the top.
English

@DanielJDevane @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK I don't need an argument, if you need a flag to make you feel less insecure, that's a statement about you, not the flag.
English

Pic from John Vaughan of @SouthernRailUK 387172 in GBR livery. My take? I personally wouldn't use a flag at the moment, but I don't hate the livery - there are worse. I just think there are more important issues to deal with around GBR than this.

English

Ahhh, you “don’t need an argument”.
Typical educated response from a leftie!
Making everyone fly flags on their homes, yes that would be a bit of an Americanism.
But the fact that our national rail operator is using our national colours shouldn’t be and isn’t controversial or unexpected. Technically there isn’t a flag on that train. The design is based off the Union flag clearly, but last time I checked the lines of St George’s Cross are perpendicular.
If those red lines were blue and the rest of the train was grey for example, would you be moaning about a flag? Probably not.
I think what you’re really upset about is the use of red, white and blue.
Everyone has a right to their opinion on a livery, but claiming jingoism because there are some red lines with white and a blue background is just silly.
English

@DanielJDevane @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK it is what it is, anyone would think you don't know what country you're from.
English

Define “flagshagging”
There is no such thing. You can fly a flag or you don’t. That’s it.
People are proud of it. The flag doesn’t need to be everywhere all the time, of course.
But you can’t get triggered when people want to fly a flag.
It's a completely different situation to America. Just because people are becoming prouder of flying our own flag doesn't mean they’re "flagshaggers."
In America they pledge allegiance to the flag, all of that is unnecessary here because we're a Monarchy and have different traditions.
English

@DanielJDevane @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK YouGov is owned by a Tory and I doubt they asked the same question, either way the question is around flags up lampposts not the publics mood towards flagshagging.

Sounds like you’re losing the argument

And this is with Labour voters imagining a best case scenario of what a Burnham premiership will look like, against a backdrop of a very unpopular current PM.
So after months of Burnham being PM, nothing much changing, the novelty factor of a new PM gone, even their most popular man won’t be able to rescue Labour.

@EvanCull @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK It’s you making assumptions. Again, all very ironic.
2025:
60% want more flags in civic/public areas like lampposts and town halls
58% say Britain should display more flags publicly
English

@DanielJDevane @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK actually no, that's just you making assumptions, though at this point you are just engagement farming.
English

@EvanCull @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK It’s rather ironic that you are now speaking for the British people, when you are in fact, the minority when it comes to being triggered by a flag and crying ‘jingoism.’
English

@DanielJDevane @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK No it didn't, that's a special occasion, we also do it for sport, fact of the matter is British people aren't jingoistic flagshaggers.
English

@DanielJDevane @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK "In England all the boasting & flag-wagging is done by small minorities. The patriotism of ordinary people is not vocal". - Orwell
English

@EvanCull @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK Flag flying in Britain predates modern US symbolism by centuries.
English

@DanielJDevane @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK what's that got to do with anything I just said... diddly squat.
English

@DanielJDevane @Clinnick1 @SouthernRailUK no, most people just think jingoism is cringe and unbritish because it's neither understated nor refined.
