INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION PRESS STATEMENT RE: REVISED TIMETABLE AND SCHEDULE OF ACTIVITIES FOR 2027 GENERAL ELECTION At the meeting of the Commission with the Political Parties on Tuesday, 24th March 2026, concerns were raised on the timeline for the submission of Political Parties’ Registers of Members under the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, which was originally fixed for 1st April 2026 to 21st April 2026. The Commission, at the said meeting, agreed to adjust the period for the submission of the Political Parties’ Registers of Members to align the 21 days prescribed by Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act, 2026, with the actual dates fixed by political parties themselves. Political parties are accordingly informed that they are free to fix the dates of their primaries within the approved period from the 23rd of April 2026 to the 30th of May 2026. It is imperative that parties adhere to this timeline to ensure a smooth electoral process. The register of party members must be submitted to INEC not later than 21 days before the holding of their respective primaries. This means that the final deadline for the submission of political parties’ registers of members is extended to 10th May 2026, from the 21st April 2026 originally contained in the revised Timetable. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman,Information and Voter Education Committee. Friday, 27th March, 2026.

Strategy and what again? I actually think there is a tone deafness among people who work boldly with this government in public. It’s like you don’t understand the anger. Do we all think we are exempt from the incompetence of this government?

It takes brains to design government policies, but it takes heart to implement them. It is not necessarily the brains of government we complain about. It is the fact that they have no heart for the people.

We should be battling with global power for a seat at the table. But somehow, our own leaders are holding us back. So, when I see people limiting me to conversations about constructing roads and buying transformers, I am greatly disgusted.

When I was growing up, we used to play “Police & Thief” inside uncompleted buildings and other open spaces like this. I always liked to play the “thief” as it meant that the “police” would look for me, and they might not be able to find me because of how well I could hide. If I spotted them first, I would simply shout, “gbooaaa”, then say, “I don kill you.” It was a fun game. There were no actual guns, and none of us were actually thieves or policemen. It was all acting. I never thought a day would come when I would actually see Nigerians take up arms and engage in a “Police & Thief” kind of act, where Nigerians are carrying live arms, chasing terrorists who are also returning fire. I am watching this video in disbelief. We have descended into chaos, without blaming those who have chosen to protect themselves as the government has failed to protect them. My heart bleeds.

“We are just waiting for President to commission it…” The “We” in question are Ogun State residents who are suffering due to epileptic power supply. But “we” are waiting for it to be commissioned. It is not obvious to me who Abians waited for anyone. “They” here means others who are pushing the good works of the government of Abia state without being paid to do so, because it is a living experience of the people of Abia State. Especially when you compare it to where they are coming from. Be it “They vs We”, Nigerians all over the country deserve and demand good governance. Until that is our lived experience, 3trillion to 19trillion will not cut it. If the revenue being generated are by human beings putting in the work, those human beings should eat the good fruits of their labour.

They did the same with the power plant in Abia. Meanwhile, Ogun State has been running its own independent power plant built under Dapo Abiodun since January. We are just waiting for President Tinubu to commission it with the airport and other massive projects. Every time we talk about investments, they dismiss it. Dapo Abiodun grew Ogun State’s economy from N3 trillion to N19 trillion. They don’t find that worthy of note. We can’t defeat the agenda because our people support it.

“7.7 million, that’s how many children were born in Nigeria in 2025. That’s over 16,000 births every single day, more than the entire Europe. Yet with rising hunger, poverty, unemployment, and insecurity, it’s clear Nigeria still isn’t taking birth control seriously” — Lady says

Guys, we need to stop this. All you had to do was post the link to the full video for Nigerians to watch and understand the context. We are at war with terrorists in Nigeria, and the last thing we need lack of trust in those that are at the frontline facing these terrorists. Please! Everything else is falling apart. Don’t join this collapse as it doesn’t only affect us internally, but it emboldens external forces who might want to test the might of Nigeria as a sovereign state. Please. Sigh!

RE: MISREPRESENTATION OF THE CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF’S REMARKS ON OPERATION SAFE CORRIDOR The attention of Defence Headquarters has been drawn to a misleading narrative circulating on social media, particularly a Facebook post which deliberately distorted the remarks of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede regarding Operation SAFE CORRIDOR. Using a framing strategy that selectively amplifies certain phrases while ignoring the full context, the post falsely suggested that the Armed Forces of Nigeria are prioritizing leniency for terrorists over justice for victims. This portrayal is not only inaccurate but also undermines ongoing national security efforts. First, it is important to clarify that Operation SAFE CORRIDOR is not an amnesty programme but a carefully structured deradicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration initiative targeted strictly at surrendered, screened and low-risk former combatants. The programme forms part of a broader counter-insurgency strategy combining kinetic and non-kinetic approaches. Evidence shows that hundreds of individuals have passed through this process since inception, contributing to intelligence gathering and weakening insurgent structures. Second, the comments by the CDS were made within the context of a professional military doctrine lecture, emphasizing the importance of multi-dimensional conflict resolution. His remarks highlighted global best practices where rehabilitation complements battlefield successes, not replaces them. Any attempt to frame these remarks as sympathy for terrorists is a gross misinterpretation. Third, the Nigerian Armed Forces remain unequivocally committed to neutralizing active terrorists and protecting law-abiding citizens. The same leadership of the Armed Forces being misrepresented continues to direct aggressive operations across various theatres of conflict. Operation SAFE CORRIDOR simply addresses a different category of individuals; those who have voluntarily disengaged and met strict profiling criteria. Furthermore, it is instructive to note that strategic communication in modern warfare recognizes the importance of de-radicalisation as a tool to reduce recruitment pipelines and break cycles of violence. The selective framing seen in the viral post ignores this critical dimension and instead promotes a simplistic and misleading narrative. The Defence Headquarters urges the public to: 1. Disregard sensational and out-of-context interpretations of official statements. 2. Rely on verified channels for accurate information on military operations. 3. Support ongoing military efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace and security across the country. The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain a professional institution guided by law, doctrine and an unwavering commitment to national security. The leadership of General Olufemi Oluyede reflects decades of distinguished service, operational experience and strategic competence in addressing complex security challenges.
