MIND-BLOWING: There was a disturbing incident in LA in which a Mexican woman was attacked by another woman who had a dispute with her over operating an illegal food stand. Rather than using the incident to highlight the growing problem of crime and victimization in the city, her son took to social media to promote her illegal business, framing the attack as an opportunity to rally public support and organize an event in support of her illegal food stand. No one deserves to be physically attacked, especially an older woman. That is never acceptable. However, it is equally wrong and dangerous to mislead the public by claiming that “nobody needs a permit” to operate a food stand on LA sidewalks. This is simply not true and very dangerous. Spreading this lies encourages others to break the law. Those who believe it and set up similar illegal operations risk serious fines and other penalties. Even more concerning is the situation facing illegal immigrants who may be tempted to start these businesses. Because they fear deportation or fines, they may be reluctant to report crimes committed against them, making them especially vulnerable to extortion, blackmail, and unreported violence. Meanwhile, these illegal vendors unfairly undermine law-abiding businesses in the area. Small businesses must bear the heavy burden of paying high rents, taxes, insurance, and permit fees, while illegal operators operate tax-free. What’s particularly striking is that his mother has been running her illegal stand for years, meaning she has avoided paying taxes and complying with regulations for years. Yet her son is now pushing the narrative that she is simply trying to make an “honest living.” I cut the last part of his video because I refuse to promote her illegal business where he included the address and time for people to come buy her food and support her illegal food stand. These illegal businesses must be shut down across our cities. Otherwise, our sidewalks will be overtaken by illegal street enterprises that fuel crime and disorder.
