These aerial photos of Jerusalem from 1917 and today highlight a common misconception: Notice that almost all the Arab neighborhoods outside the Old City are tiny or nonexistent—Silwan, Abu Tor, Isawiya, etc. People believe that all Arab villages have existed for centuries and that only Jews arrived here in the 20th century, but history says otherwise. Jews brought prosperity to this land in the 20th century; the Arabs followed.

9/ "Nicanor who made the gates" The Nicanor ossuary was found in a Second Temple-era burial site on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem. The ossuary has two inscriptions: one in Greek that reads, 'The ossuary of Nicanor of Alexandria, who made the gates,' and another in Hebrew, written in formal Jewish script, stating 'Nicanor Alexa,' identifying him as 'Nicanor the Alexandrian.' Which gates? This brings us to a well-known story in the Talmud (Yoma 38a) about Nicanor donating the doors for the Second Temple and having them shipped to Israel. When a storm hit and the ship started to sink, one of the doors was thrown into the sea. When they tried to throw the second door, Nicanor held onto it and said they would have to throw him in as well. The storm then stopped. When they reached shore, the first door was waiting for them. The gate at the Second Temple was named in his honor: Nicanor Gate. Although all the other gates of the Temple were upgraded to gold, Nicanor's copper gates remained.
