Today, the federal New Democratic Party selected its new leader. It is clear that the direction of the federal party under this new leader, someone who openly cheered for the defeat of the Alberta NDP government, is not in the interests of Alberta. Last year, Alberta’s New Democrats voted overwhelmingly to make membership in the federal party optional. Many thousands of our provincial members, including myself, are not members of the federal party. We are a big tent and welcome the support of people who vote for every federal party. We believe in Alberta and we believe in Canadian energy and the good jobs it creates. We believe in more pipelines and in reducing emissions. We believe in strong public services and a strong jobs-driven economy to help pay for them. This is what we are fighting for every day. Albertans deserve federal leaders who understand the importance of Alberta and our essential role in the federation. Our focus is not on what the federal NDP says or does. Our fight is with Danielle Smith and the separatist UCP. Albertans deserve a better government, and we are here to be that better government.

The inexorable logic of the war leads directly to full-scale ground invasion unless we’re willing to end the war on unfavorable terms — because ending the war on unfavorable terms would be humiliating and risk dollar hegemony. Well guess what? There’s no way to end the war on favorable terms without a full-scale ground invasion. Anyone who reads the WSJ opinion page understands this argument that the neocons have just now chosen to reveal (it was their secret plan the entire time). That was the entire point of Netanyahu convincing Trump to launch the decapitation strikes — the Israelis and their U.S. fifth column made a bet that we wouldn’t be willing to buck the escalation trap. A limited incursion of ground troops is not going to strengthen our negotiating position and risks further entrenchment and humiliating losses and casualties, which we are already suffering — look at the destroyed plane and double-digit casualties yesterday in Saudi Arabia. Once the limited ground troops hit the shores of Iran and inevitably get bogged down under drone and missile fire, the neocons will reveal their next argument: President Trump can’t possibly cut and run now — we must mobilize for a full-scale invasion and march on Tehran to secure the Uranium, destroy the missiles, and open the Strait of Hormuz.

I’m watching Falling Down for the first time since I originally saw it over 30 years ago. This movie has aged surprisingly well. Not only is it literally the embodiment of grand theft auto in terms of leveling up from weapons: from nothing, to baseball bat, to knife, to a bag of guns. Not only in terms of issues of domestic violence, where a wife could get a restraining order in the absence of any physical violence, but only in apprehension of perceived potential. But in terms of domestic issues of unemployment, gangs, veterans being neglected, mass immigration, drugs… Holy hell, this movie is something everyone needs to rewatch.
