x402 is for monetizing backends: -> Charge a fee for API requests CommissionRoad is for onchain apps: -> charge fee when users submit txs

@divine_economy More apps on L1 means a much simpler approach to fees too. Bridging fee revenue from 20+ L2s to your desired holding chain is a lot of overhead for app builders.

i've been critical of the EF mandate, but let me say this we've been live on 20+ chains for years, including all major L2s. this past month is the first time—ever—that nearly everyone has wanted to run their opinion markets on ethereum mainnet are tx costs higher? sure. but if you're spending tens or hundreds of dollars to earn tens or hundreds of dollars, that cost is pretty negligible. everyone understands the game now, and it's not surprising that game is upsetting a lot of people. because the game is simple: scale the L1 as the place where apps are built.

@0xcuriousapple I think this speaks to a lack of monetization tools in the space for anyone building north of the protocol layer. Like, I shouldn't need a grant to do a round of audits on a custom contract just to add fees to my dapp.

i dont think grants in crypto work anymore there is too much supply and very few legit builders 99/100 are there for grant hunting and not to build something long term

@EliBenSasson The lack of revenue models for building dapps on existing protocols. "One protocol, one official dapp" is hamstringing web3

@lex_node Competition solves this. Right now there is no real incentive to build on existing protocols if you can't take a fee. App builders don't wanna own custom unaudited smart contracts just to take a fee.

from talking to other builders, I would say that the one aspect of the EF mandate that they don't like is the free open source license purism I think this is an extremely tough nut to crack because on the one hand, blockchain doesn't really make sense on a 'closed source' basis (note closed source includes merely source available), but OTOH, every project needs funding, which (if it's an app) means it needs investors, which means it need a way to deliver returns to investors, which means it needs some type of moat (even if temporary)...people will say 'do red hat model' but do you know actual VCs who want to invest in 'red hat' models today? I would say the Ethereum Foundation should do something structural to solve this problem (or at least seem like it's even aware of the tension) or every application on Ethereum will continue trending toward business-source licensure (if not worse)...

@LefterisJP @owocki I think users understand and are willing to pay for a good experience. Uniswap frontend did like 130m in app fees before protocol fees turned on.

@owocki this. this. this. Grants, donations, etc are not a solution. We need business models and we need users who realize that the "apps are free" kind of narrative or god forbid, app should pay you to use it is dead and buried and hurt the ecosystem a lot already

if we want to see 1000s of CROPS apps blossom … we need a business model for CROPS apps that scales what SAAS was to web2, we need for CROPS-era Ethereum apps

@owocki @darryl__yeo I'm building this with CommissionRoad! Imo the unlock is good monetization tools. It's still strangely hard to build a dapp on existing protocols and take a fee, without writing a new contract. Dapp monetization is an interesting frontier I'm glad to see people talking about

At 13, I begged my folks for a PC and taught myself to build websites. Building that cheap Frankenstein machine with my stepdad is a core memory. But I'm curious now, are kids asking their parents for $200/mo Claude subscriptions? Are we culturally there yet?

We just shipped our new website. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on a revamp, we built it ourselves with Claude Code in just 2 days. Our only costs were the Claude subscription and our domain name. Check out our updated list of portcos. ↓

@merkl_xyz Y'all are an inspiration. Finding a web3 problem that everyone in the space was inhousing and giving folks a tool so they can focus on their actual business instead of building repetitive infra. We used y'all at Delv and it was a great experience. Keep up the great work! ♥️

The way AI sees emdashes as the 27th letter of the alphabet is wild. Telling it to never use emdashes just doesn't work. Might as well be telling it to never use the letter "a".

@tevmtools This looks awesome, how does memory client work? Is it a fresh node or can we fork at a specific block to avoid redeploying contracts in beforeEach? Better yet, is it possible to load it from a snapshot like in anvil to completely avoid any network calls in test?
