@Jattaylor A good starting point for discussing some of the contemporary narrative around what an effective coach does...and what it is to coach?

"The present study disputes the argument that all the decisions made by the coach must have the player as the central focus, suggesting that this is not representative of the reality of coaching" Castro & Morgan (2025) doi.org/10.1080/174089…

@Jattaylor You mean performance and result is a combination of both athlete and coach performance?! Who knew 😉

@russellearnshaw I witnessed many times Eddie Jones working with his coaches to observe games (being shown live on TV) and ask questions as to what & how would be the most important messages now to players if we were coaching this game. IMO it was good stuff.

For environmental sustainability reasons, FIH announced some years ago the importance of hockey moving away from watering artificial turf and working with the turf industry to develop surfaces that no longer need to be watered. The first ever FIH #Hockey5s World Cup, currently being played in Oman, is also the first global FIH tournament to be played on one of these new, non-watered surfaces - a significant step forwards for the sport. As part of efforts to reproduce as closely as possible the aspects of watered turf that give athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills, during the tournament the FIH is testing a completely new ball technology. In another first, the tournament is being played with innovative new “wet balls”, developed by scientists from the University of Ghent in Belgium. In simple terms, these balls absorb some water when being submerged before each match, which is then released in tiny drops as the ball rolls across the surface, resulting in a thin layer of water between the ball and the surface, and also between the stick and the ball. This significantly improves the smoothness of hockey skills during play on the dry turf. Whilst this technology is being thoroughly assessed on an ongoing basis, the first feedback, from the players, is very positive. “The idea of a wet ball to use on a dry pitch is very innovative. It has come at a very good time for us as it fits with our goal of minimising hockey’s impact on the environment, by using much less water to play our sport. I believe we are moving in the right direction”, said FIH President Tayyab Ikram. #Sustainability
