Over the past five years, my rent has doubled from £550 to £1,100 per month — an extra £6,600 per year. My gross wage rose only from £27,000 to £28,200 — a £1,200 annual increase that barely covers tax and NI. Nominal wage rises mean nothing if essential costs like housing are not controlled. The extra pay disappears into higher rents, energy, food, and council tax, leaving me with less real disposable income and no progress toward saving for a home. Wage increases without capping or tackling the drivers of runaway costs (especially housing supply shortages) are an illusion. They fuel inflation and erode living standards rather than improve them. Please address the cost side — build more homes, reform planning, and control excessive rent/price growth — or working people will keep treading water.

Those behind last night’s attack in Dunmurry speak for absolutely no one. They have no vision, no support, and have nothing to offer our society. Our communities deserve peace.
