I have never seen such comprehensive natural endowments before. But if there's one thing I have learned is that when nature gives you too much of something good or a bunch of things, it tends to also subtract something else. For Messi, it is height. For Yamal, it appears to be shooting. Which brings me back to the beginning of this tweet. Yamal's shooting techique is poor - even relative to non elite attackers. Which is made more striking considering the high volume of shooting opportunities he routinely generates for himself. The knee jerk, unthinking, low perception, plebian, rebuttal to this point is "he is young, he will improve" My answer is that he won't. Shooting, like all technical qualities, typically improves when the underlying technique is good and simply requires refinement - which usually happens as a player develops and gains experience. But when the technique itself is flawed, there is little to refine. Yamal's technique is poor. You cannot calibrate poor technique and you cannot teach it either. Which is why these days, he is trying to adapt by toe-poking close range finishes (like he did against ATM) rather than wrap his foot around the ball like most players do. Wingers with poor shooting technique rarely evolve into decent finishers. And the most vibrant contemporary proof of that claim is Vinicius. At 25, his shooting is still as lousy as it was when I first saw him at 18. So yes, Yamal will score the occassional banger by cutting in from the right, but he will never be able to consistently do so because the technical foundation for it is absent. - Messi has it - Mbappe has it - Oliseh (the closest profile to Yamal rn) has it - Robben had it - Ribery had it Yamal does not. Nature has given him everything else - and then some. But all those gifts, like all (natural) gifts come at a cost And in his case, it's shooting.
