Child’s Pose (Balasana) is a gentle, restorative yoga posture that research and clinical experience support as effective for reversing accumulated body tension, promoting deeper breathing, and helping shift the nervous system into a more relaxed, parasympathetic state. By lengthening the spine, opening the hips and shoulders, and gently compressing the abdomen and forehead, the pose releases tight muscles and fascia while encouraging slow diaphragmatic breathing and vagus-nerve stimulation. Studies on yoga practices, including those specifically using Balasana, have shown reductions in cortisol, heart rate, and perceived stress, along with improvements in relaxation and recovery. While dramatic “reversal” claims should be taken with reasonable expectations, the pose is safe, accessible, and widely recommended for stress relief and tension release when practiced regularly with proper form or modifications.
