Sometimes, when I’m conducting an interview, I notice little tributaries opening up, directions the conversation could take if I chose to follow them. In those moments, I have to make a decision: do I try to bring us back on track as I understand it, or is this something worth following? In this conversation, one of those tributaries opened up into his personal life, into some very painful and deeply human experiences. I chose to follow it, and I’m really glad I did. What followed was honest, raw, and at times hard to listen to, but also deeply hopeful. I think many of you will find it not only moving, but genuinely helpful.
