I had an especially off day yesterday. I was kinda grumpy the whole day, just felt off, and I had a really hard time doing any work. Ended the day feeling pretty burnt out. In other news, found out this morning that Abby accidentally put decaf in our grinder yesterday.

I can now say I’ve experienced a meeting with Zoom bombers. Yikes.

@redbirdred Oh no worries! I had that happen in another session, too. Thanks so much for moderating!

@Derek_Denis The “I just try to be myself at work” ideology was much more gendered (men said this) than position-related, fwiw. Which isn’t shocking either. (And also looking to incorporate Sharma’s stuff more explicitly in the future!)

@Derek_Denis This is a great point! I wondered that myself, and it’s hard to tease apart. Melissa (second case study) said she did worry about sounding professional at work, but then she didn’t really do much in those moments of conflict. Could be structural security for sure.

If you were in my session, I was going to say: “but people like the CEO and management have power to dictate what happens more so than in something like an Instagram community. Thinks like job segregation are often more enforced (or at least highly pressured) than selected.

Did you want to go to a paper in the “Style and Stylistic Variation” panel tomorrow, but there were too many good papers opposite ours? Good news! The panel’s been moved to 9:35 🤠 (Texas time). Adjust accordingly!

In case of any technical issue, a link to my talk tomorrow ("Multiple Social Routes") is here: vimeo.com/633179621 I talk about style, I talk about structure, I talk about Southern vowels (with lots of sound clips!). Excited to hear comments and questions tomorrow!

Well, that or the sinus headaches. Or the only being able to do anything remotely cognitively strenuous for like four hours a day. Those are also bad.

Honestly the worst thing (re:getting covid) is that the first feeling you have is “what did I do wrong”. Like I’m a sociologist who constantly tells students to not individualize structural problems, but it’s such a strong internalized ideology that it’s my first reflex
