BREAKING: Last month, the U.K. government issued a secret order requiring Apple to allow the British Government retrieval of all content worldwide stored on iCloud.
Over 2 billion users store their data on iCloud, Apple's centralized data storage platform. While Apple strives to lead in data privacy and security through encryption, your privacy is still at risk on any centralized storage platform.
This order as published is concerning on several levels:
1. It's a “secret” government order that Apple is prohibited from disclosing.
2. The order gives them access to ALL 2 billion users worldwide storing their data on iCloud.
3. Apple and other centralized storage providers hold your encryption keys. Under lawful orders, they are required to decrypt your cloud data and make it available via a "back door".
4. Back door government access is rife for abuse and will certainly be a target for hackers and criminals.
5. This government order is not exclusive to Apple, nor the U.K. This is an ongoing risk when storing your personal or enterprise data with any centralized storage provider.
