Pierre Poilievre knows (or should know): a) this is an import terminal, designed to import. b) the terminal supplies the northeast United States (as well as Canada) c) as soon as we're talking about ports, we're talking about a global market and global market economics. Napkin math: A workable rule of thumb is ~$0.05 per MMBtu per 1,000 km of sailing distance - so about a dollar for the full distance you've describe. That works out to about the same price per GJ as the toll on the existing TC Energy Mainline that ships natural gas from western to eastern Canada. The market is sophisticated, and while I am completely in favour of Canadian self-reliance and making sure we can fuel ourselves, there will always be imports, exports, swaps - and in a free market, that's a good thing. If Pierre is suggesting we should only buy Canadian on non-market terms, what he's accidentally describing is essentially reintroducing the National Energy Program. We're in serious times. Let's have serious conversations about energy, not whatever this is from Pierre.
