BREAKING NEWS ALERT: Scooter-riding thieves break into the Louvre museum in Paris, swiping priceless jewels belonging to Napoleon in brazen daylight heist. Professional thieves broke into the Louvre Sunday morning — stealing priceless jewels that belonged to Emperor Napoleon in a brazen daylight heist in Paris. The robbers used an aerial lift and an angle grinder to break in through the window of the iconic French attraction, before making off with nine pieces of jewelry, Le Parisien reported. The gang was in an out in just 10 minute — between 9:30 and 9:40 a.m., French outlet Le Monde reported. The museum was evacuated and closed as police swarmed the area — sparking panic among some tourists. Among the items snatched were a necklace, a brooch, and a tiara — the exact worth of which are still being calculated. French authorities on Sunday found a damaged 19th-century crown near the Louvre museum in Paris following a robbery earlier in the day. The crown, which belonged to Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III, features golden eagles and is covered in 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds, according to the museum’s website. Earlier today, the world-renowned museum was targeted in a heist, following which the officials said that the robbers made off with “priceless” jewels in broad daylight. Forensic work is now underway to compile a detailed list of what was stolen, the French government said. One of the precious items, believed to be a crown belonging to Napoleon’s wife, Empress Eugenie, was discovered damaged outside the gallery, according to Le Parisien. “Beyond their market value, the items have inestimable heritage and historical value,” the French Interior Ministry said in a statement. The Louvre, home to Leonardo da Vinci’s painting The Mona Lisa, is the world’s most popular museum, attracting nearly 9 million visitors in 2024, regularly drawing more than 30,000 a day. In June, the museum was forced to close after a mass staff walkout, with workers blaming overcrowding and chronic understaffing. Authorities discovered the crown of Empress Eugenie near the museum afterwards. The robbery prompted authorities to close the Louvre for the rest of the day, as the police hunt the culprits. The tourists and visitors were evacuated from the museum, and armed soldiers patrolled around the main entrance. The theft took place at the heavily guarded museum between 9:30 and 9:40 am. Three or four thieves broke into the museum and completed the heist in bright daylight on a weekend in just seven minutes and fled with “priceless” jewellery from the Louvre, which houses several valuable French crown jewels. They targeted two displays in the exhibition venue’s “Gallerie d'Apollon”. The thieves were wielding “angle grinders” and used a “cherry picker” to gain entry inside the museum. The authorities said, “Nine pieces from the jewellery collection of Napoleon and the Empress,” but the crown of Empress Eugenie was later found near the museum. The priceless imperial crown belonged to Empress Eugenie, wife of Emperor Napoleon III, the nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. It is among the most treasured articles at the Louvre Museum. The crown features beautiful goldwork and golden eagles, with dazzling 1,354 diamonds and 56 emeralds. The precious jewellery is a symbol of 19th-century French imperial elegance. The crown, crafted principally by Alexandre-Gabriel Lemonnier in August 1855, is based on a pattern from the imperial arms of the First Empire. The full extent of damage to the piece is not known yet. As well as the French Crown Jewels, the Appollon Gallery also houses a hardstone vessel collection that once belonged to French King Louis XIV, as well as the famous Regent diamond, weighing at over 140 carats. The three masked robbers were hooded and were carrying “small chainsaws,” according to Le Parisien. One of the robbers waited outside for the others before they made their escape. They made off on two scooters.

109 years ago, at Beaumont-Hamel, on the morning of the first day of the Somme offensive, 800 Newfoundlanders went into battle. Only 68 were able to answer the roll call the next day. Today, we remember those proud Newfoundlanders who made the ultimate sacrifice. Learn more about the Battle of the Somme from the Royal Newfoundland Regiment Museum, linked in the comments below.
