“Rory Stewart is the best prime minister we never had.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read that sentence, in my texts, in comments sections, after our interviews. Over the last 10 years he’s spoken to me as a Tory leadership contender, Covid canary in the coal mine, independent London mayoral candidate, or, as in this instance, a podcaster and author. His brand of conscientious conservatism beguiles the significant part of our country that is relatively normal and looked on in horror/confusion as the right wing actively attacked Britain and/or descended into explicit bigotry, parochialism, and conspiracy. We spoke about political evil and how it’s often fun to be so, boarding schools, and whether or not we should rewild wolves in Britain. Eclectic and thoughtful. Performative and precise. I think it’s the best episode of The Exchange so far, but it’s Yanis Varoufakis next week and that was pretty good too. @DuncanLindsay Yes, kids have been suffering - thousands of them - because of adults' bigotry. The bigotry of people like you, who tell kids that how they feel changes what they are, put them at risk for it, and won't consider for one second that they might be the ones who are wrong.

@JournalismSEEN Davie wasn't an activist and made seemingly sincere noises about impartiality all the way through his tenure, yet he still completely failed to listen to or act on all the advice he was given on gender and Israel, and stop the rot. I'm not optimistic.

Matt Brittin hasn’t officially been named yet but he will be. He’s got transgender activism - and pronouns - in his history. There are a number of middle-aged men at the BBC who’ve been key in promoting and supporting gender ideology and affirmation. Tim Davie wasn’t one of them, and it was a disaster for this issue that he left. Most of those men are still in role, and in Matt Britton we could get another. It still seems unlikely that the BBC will resume its extreme obsession with self-identification, but it’s full of gender guerillas, and they’ll redouble their efforts. Anyone who can make representations to him, make them early doors. He has to understand there is no going back.

@MysteriosoX @IvorGCampbell The ironic thing about HS2 is had they used the specification for HS1, max speed would have been slightly slower but costs would have been significantly less We over-engineer stuff, add huge amounts of extra costs and end up slowing the bloody trains anyway

….did ancient hunter-gatherer bands practice monogamy? I mean, did they? How do we know this, does it show up on the richter scale? Has someone gone back millennia and got them all to fill out a survey?

This is actually mostly wrong. Our species norm is not polygyny. We are not gorillas. Yes, 80% of cultures are polygamous, but polygamy only spread after agriculture. The hunter-gatherer bands we spent hundreds of thousands of years in before that were monogamous. Also, Christianity did not inherit monogamy from Rome. It is true that Roman wives were expected to be monogamous, but Roman husbands could, and were even expected to, have sex with courtesans, concubines, prostitutes, and slaves. Christian monogamy was a sharp break, a true sexual revolution, away from the norm of powerful men monopolizing women. Now Louise Perry is correct that “lifting the monogamous restriction produces worse outcomes.” Monogamy is far better for society than polygamy. But that is because monogamy is our natural state, it was just corrupted for centuries after the dawn of agriculture. We are a species designed to form pair bonds and raise families together. Now there are tons of things in the modern world that are making it harder and harder to do that, but that is our natural state and we should fight to return to it.

@gcraven10 I had a hazy understanding that in pre-history, the social unit was essentially, the tribe and they didn’t really grasp how paternity worked (it is rather a long cause and effect) and therefore, you looked after all the kids in the tribe because they were *all* yours
