Trump: I’m not sure about Alex Pretti's parents, but I know that Renee Good’s parents were big Trump fans. Makes me feel bad anyway, but, I mean, I guess you could say even worse. They were tremendous Trump people, Trump fans.

@MarkKaboly @PatMcAfeeShow They don’t need to hire another Tomlin. They need a coach who wins championships & hires coordinators without ego being a part of it

Steelers need to combine old-school beliefs with new-age thinking to pick next coach Mark Kaboly / Steelers Correspondent For The @PatMcAfeeShow PITTSBURGH — Art Rooney II has been down this road before, albeit infrequently for an organization that’s had three head coaches in nearly three generations, so the team’s owner and team president knows what he’s looking for in a new head coach. And it’s not what you think it might be. The last three coaches were all cut from the same cloth – young and inexperienced, defensive-minded coordinators with larger-than-life personalities. Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and, most recently, Mike Tomlin were quite successful as Steelers head coaches over the past 56 seasons, and all three fit into that mold, so conventional thinking would suggest that Rooney wouldn’t deviate much from what has worked in the past during his now ongoing coaching search. Well, maybe, but preferably not. “Would I sign up for another Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, or another Mike Tomlin? Sure,” said Rooney, who spoke for the first time since Tomlin stepped down after 19 years on the job. “Somebody we feel that fits that mold would be great, but for now, we aren’t going to narrow the box too much. I don’t want to put any parameters on it. We are going to be an open book for who we look for.” Rooney said what he was supposed to say – everybody is on the table, but should we truly believe that? If the last three years are any indication, the answer is hell yes. Since hiring general manager Omar Khan in May of 2022, Rooney has changed the way the organization was structured, what they thought of adding high-priced free agents, how they structured contracts, and how they incorporated trades into their yearly routine. So, when Rooney said that they will have an open mind in finding the 17th coach in franchise history, you have to tend to believe him, especially with Khan not only being mentioned as being involved in the process but was alongside Rooney when he talked for 15 minutes inside Acrisure Stadium on Tuesday. Khan sat mere yards away from the boss on Wednesday alongside the speculated eventual successor to the 73-year-old Rooney, son Danny Rooney. Although not mentioned by name by his father, the 36-year-old Rooney, who is currently the Vice President of Business Development & Strategy, is believed to be also involved in the new coach hiring process that should bring a progressive view to the search. According to reports, the Steelers have already reached out to Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula (grandson of Hall of Fame coach Don Shula) and L.A. passing game coordinator Nathan Scheelhaase as candidates. They also have reached out to defensive coordinators Brian Flores (Vikings), Anthony Weaver (Miami), and Jesse Minter (Chargers), so they are off to a slow start when it comes to diversity between offensive and defensive-minded coaches. Regardless, Rooney said that the new coach will be expected to be involved in every part of the process, just like Tomlin. Tomlin’s responsibilities got broader over the years, which was understandable. “I don’t anticipate changing our structure or our change in command,” Rooney said. “I expect the new coach – like Mike Tomlin, like Bill Cowher, like Chuck Noll – to be very involved in preparing for the draft and working closely with Omar and his staff and making sure we are ready.” The NFL has shifted toward more of an offense-minded league that has play callers and offensive coaches all the rage during head coaching hiring cycles. Zac Taylor, Kevin O’Connell, Kevin Stefanski, Sean McVay, Kyle Shanahan, and Sean Payton are a few, but it’s not been exclusive. Mike Vrabel, DeMeco Ryans, and Mike Macdonald, all of whom have defensive backgrounds, are still alive in the divisional round of the playoffs, so success isn’t exclusive to what side of the ball the head coach cut his teeth on. That’s why Rooney should, and will, value one thing over everything else when ultimately choosing the next head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers – leadership. That’s very important to Rooney. Tomlin, Cowher, and Noll all had an uncanny knack for people, high-level leaders, and that trumps everything else in the eyes of Rooney. “No. 1, in my mind, is leadership and trusting that this person can stand up in front of your team day in and day out and hold their attention and have them motivated to do what they do,” Rooney said. “That’s the most important part. What I have learned is that when you start the search to have an open mind. When we had Mike in for his first interview, certainly, we didn’t think he was going to be our next head coach. You go through the process and be diligent and hopefully come out with the right guy.” With the Steelers getting a relatively late start on the search, the timeline might stretch into February before they decide on who they will hire, especially since Rooney was somewhat surprised when Tomlin informed him that he was stepping down on Monday morning. Tomlin arrived at the team facility less than 12 hours after losing to the Texans in the wildcard playoff round and met with Rooney for about “15-20 minutes.” That’s when Tomlin informed Rooney that he was not returning for season No. 20. “It was his decision,” Rooney said. “I would say that I wasn’t shocked; I was expecting that conversation, either. When you get to this stage of a career, and he even mentioned it himself, that he was near the end rather than the beginning, so you could see that coming. I can’t say that I was shocked.” Despite not winning a playoff game for nine years and their season ending with another blowout playoff loss, Rooney was prepared to run it back for another year with Tomlin after a third-straight 10-win season and their first AFC North title since 2020. Rooney described the reason why Tomlin stepped down as family-related. “In my mind and with the discussion that we had, it was more of a family decision, but I don’t want to speak for Mike on that,” Rooney said. Rooney quickly had to pivot into coach-searching mode. “It was an emotional day for everybody in our franchise,” Rooney said. “I was certainly willing to take another run at it next year with Mike, and that’s what I was expecting to talk about, but it went in a different direction. The bottom line is that we were always in contention with Mike, and that’s what counts.” If leadership is Rooney’s top priority, then winning isn’t far behind. Rooney will stick to his philosophy of trying to win now and worry about tomorrow some other day, and that goes for whoever the next coach will be. “I am not sure why you would waste a year not trying to contend,” Rooney said. “Sometimes you have the horses, and sometimes you don’t, but you try it every year. The standard is trying to compete to win a championship every year. I am not going to say that we are going to take a couple of years to figure this out and try to compete. It’s a new coach, and there will be changes, whether you call it a rebuild. I don’t like that word that much. We will try to compete on Day 1.” But what they can’t be is singularly focused on trying to replicate what has worked in the past and apply it today. Yeah, it’s a formula that has worked for them for the past half-century, but the Steelers would be doing themselves a disservice if they fall back to what’s comfortable, even if it has worked.
