I personally don't think this ever gets built, certainly not for less than $90B. However, if Canadians have been asking for this for decades, why did the party who has governed for more than a decade not do something about it until now? Does the minister not realize the irony?

Pierre Poilievre, once again, is showing Canadians that he has no vision to create jobs and grow the economy. For decades, Canadians have advocated for a modern, fast, inter-city rail network. Alto is a generational investment that will transform travel and connect communities. It will boost GDP by $35 billion annually, create over 51,000 well-paying jobs, and help Canadians work, study, and travel more efficiently. Pierre Poilievre is turning his back on Canadians from Quebec City to Toronto and the communities in between. Investing in High-Speed Rail means building a more connected, competitive Canada, and proves Canada can get big things done. The Conservatives, as usual, think small. Turning away from nation-building investments is the wrong choice, and one Canadians reject at a time when we need to build and grow.

@ArfinNathaniel Yup he was spot on there. This back and forth is the perfect example of why (what I call) "market liberals" need a resurgence. It exists in name only federally, and does not exist provincially.

@davidclement I think Poilievre was right in the 25 election to call out the lobbyist/consultant overhead that exists in these kinds of projects. It's not unsubstantial.

Agreed, but the number 1 priority has to be established first. Is it a completed functional project? Or is it a jobs program? Procurement in Canada, in practice, is just inefficient jobs programs, and with $90B in play this is (IMO) destined to be a larger fiasco than in California

@davidclement I am a huge proponent of procurement reform, which is probably issue #1. Duplication of reporting has long been a problem and I'm hopeful but not convinced that's been solved.

@ArfinNathaniel So do I. Going from Tokyo to Osaka or Florence to Rome high speed is life changing, but the only way to get this done is to basically scrap all the jobs guarantees in the plan and have only foreign companies and foreign labour (Italian, Japanese, Korean) build it

@davidclement Yeah, we're really bad at infrastructure. I don't think that means this project shouldn't get built, instead we should find out why we're so damn terrible at this.

Yes that’s true but I think it generally proves my point that this never gets built. HFR created in 2022, but this project won’t break ground until the end of the decade? Japan built Tōkaidō Shinkansen (from approval to completion) in 5 years and 5 months. So in 4 years we’ve done pretty much nothing….
