Beautiful crystal structures of the first characterized Be-N and Be-O triple bonds published in @J_A_C_S. Great work from @Jones_Research - awesome to collaborate on this one!

The synthesis and characterization of two-coordinate beryllium complexes with unprecedented Be–N and Be–O triple bonds are reported in @J_A_C_S. CSD Entry WUYMIQ demonstrates the first s-block metal–oxygen multiple bond. 🔗 ccdc-info.com/4iYfbVX #FeaturedStructureFriday

@ambiigames @TXpatriotpete @22liv22 @sjs856 No problem. I’ve taken an interest in fluoridation as it’s an interesting science question. Sadly, opinions (often based on misunderstanding) have heavily distorted discussions. I take an open mind to this issue.

Fluoride is a salt form of fluorine (13th most abundant element on Earth, naturally found in water). It reinforces bones by increasing bone cell proliferation. It is completely harmless at concentrations in fluoridated water (≈ 0.7 mg/L) RFK Jr is not educated in biosciences

@DavidJDWilson @22liv22 @sjs856 Unfortunately you have misunderstood. Your claim that fluoride additives to water supplies “is harmless” is retarded based on extensive, peer-reviewed studies. Quit drinking the water, bruh. It’s killing your IQ!

@ambiigames @TXpatriotpete @22liv22 @sjs856 High (or any) levels of arsenic are not good. High levels of fluoride (above 2 mg/L) are not recommended. The question from that petition (not a research study) is about purity of the chemicals. Higher purity is better, but more expensive. Water should be regulated and tested.

@DavidJDWilson @22liv22 @sjs856 Your appeal to authority (“I am a chemist!!!!”) followed by admitted ignorance of numerous peer-reviewed studies showing a decrease in IQ among children who drink fluoridated water is exactly why people don’t trust **The Science**.

@TXpatriotpete @22liv22 @sjs856 That is not my area of expertise. I am a chemist. But from what I have read from studies, I am doubtful that it has any impact on cognitive development of children.

@CheweyLife @sjs856 Please learn some chemistry and you will se thru this common misconception. These compounds dissolve in water to produce harmless species at those concentrations. Fluoride is the species - a salt of fluorine. It is chemically irrelevant about the origin - all fluoride is same

@MaximZavet @smith_jsbe8786 @sjs856 That is chemically irrelevant. H2O is a product of chemical reactions. It is exactly the same as H2O from any other source. The molecule/chemical are all exactly the same. Same for fluoride.

@TalonOrdo @sjs856 Think of sodium. As a salt with sodium chloride (table salt) it simply dissolved in water. As sodium metal it reacts explosively with water. Same element in a different form. The chemical makeup is very important.

@sjs856 So why is it the active ingredient in Prozac?

@TalonOrdo @sjs856 Please learn some chemistry. The active ingredient in Prozac is fluoxetine, with a CF3 group. It contains organic F (C-F bonds). Fluoride is completely different. Same element but in a very different form.

@Shelleybe3 @sjs856 Please learn some chemistry - you have repeated a common misunderstanding. The compound that is added dissolves is water to give fluoride (and hydrogen ions and salicylic acid) - all harmless for human consumption at those concentrations. Fluoride is fluoride.

@sjs856 If it was only flouride that might be one thing but the source is actually industrial sludge containing many more compounds and metals than flouride. Did you think it was purified flouride?

@22liv22 @sjs856 Please learn some chemistry. Your analysis is mistaken. The compound dissolves is water to make fluoride ions, hydrogen ions, and salicylic acid. All are harmless for human consumption at the specified concentrations. Where the chemical comes from is irrelevant.

You are either not bright enough to know the truth or you are lying. Calcium fluoride is the natural occurring mineral in soil and food. Calcium fluoride is not what is added to drinking water. By-products of the fertilizer industry that are labeled as fluoride but are actually called Sodium fluorosilicate and fluorosilicic acid are what is added to drinking water. It is very poisonous and it is not the natural occurring fluoride mineral and it is not even the synthetic(still harmful) sodium fluoride. Stop talking about things you don’t know about.

We’ve been moving towards a post-literate world for some decades now. As our society returns to a primarily oral language scape, reading of any serious nature will come to be seen as weird and arcane

@ghett_smart @DuttonChemistry @beneltham Yep. I’ve learnt to ask basic fundamental questions at 3rd year. Things we take for granted aren’t always understood by students. Every year I have students who can’t recognise a p orbital while I’m explaining QM. And basic algebra…

@DuttonChemistry @beneltham Agree on both. I had a third year student ask me how I turned A-B=0 into A=B, after my first lecture. Props to them for putting their ego aside, but it was a hell of a moment.
