@ProfKinyon Very much the type of example which I had in mind - basically re-using information which you already have to improve things. I think in terms of impact, the defence is done for you :).

@five9a2 It's easy to assume, from a distance, that one knows how they think and feel, just as it's easy to conflate KAUST with KFUPM (rather like conflating Berkeley with BYU!). But they are human beings who can and do speak for themselves.

@five9a2 So I will just say that I think you would find it revealing to speak with women who work at KAUST and with the people you describe as indentured servants. I have known many wonderful and talented people in both groups and their perspective might surprise you.

@five9a2 If I have to review a paper where I don't already know the related literature well, lateral reading is the first thing I do. The same goes for when I am learning about a new subfield or topic. I don't buy the idea that academics aren't great at using lateral reading.

@corless_rob @sam_power_825 Wow, I remember following this trail just a couple of years ago. I was developing something that is somewhat similar but with a different goal (structure preservation rather than dealing with stiffness).

@sam_power_825 Now I remember. It was Sottas' paper libkey.io/doi.org/10.101… that did for rational RK methods. I was actually trying Padé methods, and on a vector linear problem they can introduce movable poles. That was a while ago...
