This medal belonged to Salli Joseph, a German Jewish tailor. His service during WWI—and the medal he received—did not protect him during the Holocaust. He and his wife, Martha (née Danziger), were deported to Auschwitz in March 1943. Both were murdered after their arrival.

May 14, 1946 | Rudolf Höss, the former Kommandant of Auschwitz, signs a declaration stating that during his tenure, 2 million Jews were gassed at Auschwitz, and another 500,000 killed in other ways. He overestimated the number of Jews gassed by roughly 1 million.

Last photos of 14-year-old Polish girl Czesława Kwoka, who was murdered in Auschwitz with a phenol injection to the heart. Moments earlier, a female guard had beaten her in the face with a stick because she did not understand what was being said to her. Wilhelm Brasse, the prisoner forced to photograph her, said the girl wiped her tears and the blood from her lower lip before the pictures were taken.
