@patmarsh "We're on the last freedom moped out of nowhere city, and we haven't even told our parents what time we'll be back" (As a fourteen year old in '86, I think I might have listened to it a little too much! 😜)

Exactly 40 years ago today, Cliff Richard became the first artist to get to Number One with two different versions of the same song. ‘Living Doll’ was a hit in 1959 and topped the UK Charts today in 1986, with the help of The Young Ones. It was the first Comic Relief single.

It seems appropriate that today is the anniversary of the Dublin band The Hype, entering the Harp Lager Contest in Limerick. They performed under their new name of U2, on this day in 1978. They made it to the finals and won a recording contract with CBS! #HappyStPatricksDay

Here’s one for all the #EastEnders fans. This omnibus edition was broadcast on the 4th of March. From the characters and the storylines, take a guess at which year…

We were out shopping earlier and it’s reassuring to see that M&S have finally found a solution to that eternal problem, of not having enough pockets in your trousers.

@patmarsh Anoraky factoid for you; did you know the time signal used to be sent from Greenwich to the BBC as a constant tone with silences where the pips should go, which was then inverted at BH for broadcasting!!!

On this day in 1924 the BBC time signals, better known as the 'pips' from Greenwich Observatory were heard for the first time. On FM radio the pips are extremely accurate, but on DAB radio, TV, and online streams they can be delayed by buffering, sometimes by several seconds.

Wishing Sir David Jason a "Perfick" 86th birthday today. The Darling Buds of May was a huge hit in the early 90’s. Much of the TV series was filmed in and around the village of #Pluckley in #Kent But here’s a photo taken in May 1991, when the cast filmed on #Folkestone beach.

January is a good time to sow sweet peas, because it helps you to grow stronger plants that flower earlier and for longer. Our Gardening Expert Julia Parker @ParkersPatch joins me after 10am today @BBCRadioKent, @BBCSussex and @BBCSurrey. Julia has plenty of hints and tips!

On this day in 1973, the artist Carl Andre opened his exhibit ‘American Decay’ It comprised of a 12-by-18-foot expanse of cottage cheese (500 gallons of it), topped with 10 gallons of ketchup. After 2 days it was removed, due to the “putrid smell which permeated the premises.”

@patmarsh The same will undoubtedly happen twenty years hence, if ever the corporation foolishly thinks the world has had enough of Pat Marsh! The baboons 🦍would desert the Tower of London and the ravens would fly away from Gibraltar! 🐦‍⬛

An iconic BBC radio show, that started each episode with the words “Hello children. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin”, began on this day in 1950. When it ended in 1982 a petition supported by MPs, members of the public and celebrities was delivered to Downing Street.

Chasing Pavements by Adele was released today, in 2008. It was inspired by an argument with a boyfriend in a West End club. She stormed out and began running along Oxford Street. She said “He didn't chase after me! So I was running, just looking at these big, wide pavements”.

Is ‘Bin Envy’ a thing? I was out walking the dogs yesterday and found myself inexplicably envious of the Christmas that has been enjoyed by the owners of this recycling bin. Whilst they’re living the high life, our bin looks like a tribute to the glory days of Poundworld!

Here’s a good example of what a weird musical decade the 1970’s were. 50 years ago, on this day in 1975, Bohemian Rhapsody was at Number 1 in the UK charts. At Number 2 was Laurel and Hardy’s 1937 recording of The Trail of the Lonesome Pine. #FromTheSublimeToTheRidiculous

I’ve just had an email from a PR company, offering a guest to talk about scams. They always say that you should be on the lookout for bad spelling, before clicking on a link. Which, in this case is ironic.
