The Dutch were the first people to set up shop in what is today known as modern day South Africa. Let us not forget the intrepid and brave Portuguese mariners such as Bartolomeu Dias who became the first known European to sail around the southern tip of Africa. He called it the “Cape of Storms,” later renamed the Cape of Good Hope by the Portuguese king because it opened the route to the East. In 1497–1498, Vasco da Gama followed Dias’s route and landed along the South African coast on his voyage to India. He named parts of the coastline, including Natal (“Christmas”) because he saw it on Christmas Day.
