2023 is bringing the print version of this volume! It feels real now with the finalized cover, and I’m so excited to have it (soon to be) out in the world.

@mythsbaby The clearest erasure of Metis in the source itself is probably Apollo’s defense of Orestes in the Eumenides, which includes a reference to Athena as “daughter who never fed and grew in the darkness of a womb, a seedling that no goddess could bring forth.”

The internet loves to say that Zeus “conceived” Athena via parthenogenesis, but every Ancient Greek source I’ve found absolutely acknowledges her mother as Metis. Does anyone know a source that says he did it without her? Not talking about the birth, but the conception.

Just got the video from my lecture as part of the College Scholars program at JCCC. This talk is an overview of my book "Virtuosity in the Age of Electronic media: Music, Labor, and Skill," which just went under contract with Palgrave! youtube.com/watch?v=mY1oQC…

My department is hiring! We’re looking for an interdisciplinary scholar-teacher with wide-ranging teaching interests to join us. JCCC is a great place to work, and I’m happy to answer questions via dm! careers.jccc.edu/en-us/job/4952…. If

@medievaliste Unfortunately, I think they also have to consider how much debt they’ve accrued prior to the PhD. If they’re already deep in debt, then even a fully-funded program may not be adequate.

I’m presenting on downhome virtuosity and the virtuoso persona at AMS/SMT/SEM in November! I just gave a version of this talk at IASPM-US, and I’m excited to incorporate the insights gained from conversations with colleagues and copanelists at that event.

just say things! try to make those things true, if you can - or interesting, or helpful, or some other value besides novelty that actually might mean something in this world. /rant

Collaborative work in the humanities is profoundly productive and energizing. Read it, cite, it, facilitate it, and (if your employment conditions allow for it), do it yourself. (This pronouncement brought to you by a lengthy meeting with my co-authors.)

@emmyru91 I think writing (and a whole lot else) is rough for just about everybody after finishing. It’s no model to follow, but a sense of desperation drove me to publish pretty quickly post-diss. It took several years to find a more healthy attitude toward scholarship.

Y'all! I'm excited to share that I'm joining the faculty at the University of Arkansas in the fall as an Assistant Professor of Musicology! I'm very sad to be leaving OCU and my wonderful friends, colleagues, and students, but I'm looking forward to what's next!

They just went to the grocery store. Buying breakfast for their kids. Looking for fresh vegetables. Getting the ingredients for Sunday dinner. They just went to the grocery store, and now they’re gone. It’s unacceptable. It’s devastating. It’s terrorism. It’s white supremacy.

Today two of my students decided they needed a muppet version of me for their final project, and then they gave it to me as the best/creepiest end of semester gift ever.

Talking about secular ritual and sport this week, so I decided to lean into my UNC fandom during class. My students in KS are inexplicably cheering for Duke, and I feel this may be the worst possible learning outcome.

Another chapter of the "Oxford Handbook of the Phenomenology of Music Cultures" is prepublished online. This one by Martin Daughtry is a phneomenology of earworms aka "involuntary musical imagery". Enjoy the read! oxfordhandbooks.com/view/10.1093/o…

@rsl318 I have 1000 thoughts on this, so feel free to dm if you want to chat more. As somebody with a music PhD I have had to work super hard to find a place outside schools of music. Even when my research and teaching has clearly gone beyond music, I seemed too specialized to some.

@medievaliste According to several people, the best talk they ever heard had moments that clearly connected to interests of the committee members, but it didn’t come off as pandering. I could never thread that needle, so I didn’t do it, but it was some non-obvious advice.

My whole family just got the kind of stomach bug (not Covid, but some other monster) that made me so sick I feel like I had a total system shutdown and reset. What was happening before I got sick? What was I like? Unfortunately I’ve not tweeted enough for anyone here to answer…
