A4 #LTHEchat Sorry, but – most of it has to be integrated. Otherwise it’s just fragments.

Sarah, I know. But its got books, journals, research. Maybe your colleague doesn’t want education to be a subject because, if it was, she’d have to take it as seriously as her own subject? Rather than just something she does on the side.
Sarah Honeychurch@NomadWarMachine

@David_Baume I had a colleague in management tell me that education was not an academic subject. It takes a lot to silence me but I had no (polite) response to that #LTHEchat

@LTHEchat Maybe it means you can duck out of doing the bits of the first and second spaces that you don’t enjoy and just do whatever you can do that works? Sounds like a good deal to me!

Santanu, that sounds pretty academic to me!
Santanu Vasant PFHEA@santanuvasant

@LTHEchat A2 Institutional barriers to reward and recognition - you are not in teaching, research or knowledge, why the pathways, why not one promotions framework? This is my day job, reward and recognition of staff for teaching and learning, much work to be done in this space. #LTHEChat

I’m not sure. One possibility is just to do the job, and prove that it works?

Diane, yes. We may be safer when we can prove that we achieve what we achieve.

A2 #LTHEchat The biggest problem may be being taken seriously - “ You’re not a proper academic, are you?” “Yes. I research, publish.” “What’s your subject?” “Higher education.” “Is that a proper subject?” And so it rolls.

Maybe the third space is the space in the middle, the space that joins, integrates, the other two spaces? That sounds to me like a powerful place to be. In the middle. Inescapable. A1 #lthechat

@LTHEchat A1 Am I the only one who dislikes the term "third space" because it implies two prior ones? Cf third rate and third world #LTHEchat

Some days, I used to think, staff and educational development. But then, I decided, no, I’m an academic. So I’m going to act like one – research, publish, et cetera. It worked for me, anyway. Did it work for the clients?

Q1 What activities have you been involved in which support teaching &/or learning that might count as ‘third space working’? (I.e. take place ‘between’ academic & professional settings) Reply with A1. and tag #LTHEchat

We all need help, from time to time. We could model “asking for help”. I often do it
Stuart@stupot42

@LTHEchat A4 At Edge Hill we're pretty good at promoting digital accessibility, but there's always room for improvement. However I think the biggest barrier is the stigma students feel is attached to admitting they require assistance. We need to remove that stigma. #LTHEchat

A1 #LTHEchat A Chinese student wrote something in chat in Chinese in my workshop this morning. I replied in Chinese. I know no Chinese. But Google Translate does.
