The Ministry of Justice’s order to delete crucial court record archives is a direct assault on the principle of open justice. I know from my own battles to access court transcripts how challenging this already is. We cannot allow the Government to scrub the public record and hinder vital scrutiny of our legal system. Miscarriages of justice can take decades to resolve, deleting court reporting could endanger ongoing and future appeals. It is a disgrace. thetimes.com/uk/law/article…

A really important piece from @prospect_uk and @LInvestigates on the rise of police use of facial recognition capabilities. The police accept that facial recognition tech can lead to false arrests because of bias - yet such concerns have been waved away. We urgently need rules governing the use of facial recognition to protect innocent citizens. prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/technolo…

Some of us have raised concerns about Palantir for some time: not ideology, real concerns about its commercial tricks and the wisdom of sharing ultra-sensitive data with a firm like this. Ministers should certainly review its contract and remember other companies can also deliver benefits. thetimes.com/uk/healthcare/…

The outgoing Chief Inspector of Constabulary has stated that the police's failure to follow reasonable lines of inquiry is 'inexcusable' and that the police "can't keep apologising for poor investigations". He raises an important point. In my adjournment debate on the Lucy Letby case on Thursday, I quoted The Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996, which requires: 'that where a criminal investigation is conducted, all reasonable steps are taken for the purposes of the investigation and, in particular, all reasonable lines of inquiry are pursued’. I also quoted Paragraph 3.5 of the Code of Practice under that Act, which states ‘In conducting an investigation, the investigator should pursue all reasonable lines of inquiry, whether these point towards or away from the suspect.” In the case of Lucy Letby, Cheshire police did not follow the letter of the law or best professional practice. thetimes.com/article/bdfccf…

Given how hard-line the ECHR was on the UK's Rwanda policy it will be interesting to see how they respond to this new EU policy. Their choice seems to be between allowing it - which would be hypocritical and arguably makes their UK judgement look political - or blocking it, which will be spectacularly controversial and may bring their continued existence into question. thetimes.com/article/00c538…

Two NHS Trusts for my constituency have been ranked the worst in the country. This is unacceptable and needs to be rapidly addressed. But what is also unacceptable is the culture of rewarding managerial failure in the NHS. In this instance, that's shown by the fact that one of those responsible for the situation at our local Trusts is now the Director of Turnaround and Recovery for the region at the very body tasked with fixing my failing Trusts. I raised this absurdity in the @HouseofCommons this morning 👇🏻

The past heads of our security services have today said we must urgently proscribe Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps because of threats posed to British citizens on UK soil. For several years, I have called on the Government to proscribe the IRGC to protect the UK, including directly asking the then Prime Minister in November 2023 👇🏻 In the interests of national security, the Government must act now.

The result is that the Type 45 cost an estimated £126,000 per effective operational day as of 2021 – but so few British destroyers are actually available to sail. From the Blair‑era exit from Horizon to choosing an unproven engine and hollowing out personnel and support, successive governments have turned a world‑class design into an expensive fleet that too often can’t leave port when crises erupt.

Meanwhile, the Royal Navy faces a severe manning crisis – a 40 per cent recruitment shortfall – meaning that even when ships are fixed, there often aren’t enough sailors to crew them, compounding the technical failures. Treasury-driven false economies made things worse when limited dock capacity forced “cannibalisation” of parts and directly delayed Dragon’s deployment. inews.co.uk/news/royal-nav…

A 🧵👇🏻 Today, in the @HouseofCommons we are debating Defence matters as our @Conservatives opposition day motion. An important aspect of our national Defence, is ensuring our military can rapidly respond to events as they unfold. The saga involving HMS Dragon, which has only now arrived in the Eastern Mediterranean after an emergency six day scramble at home, compressing what should have been six weeks of preparation into round the clock work, shows how poor decision making impacts our ability to respond to crises. theguardian.com/politics/2026/…
