@LaurelMtMan Beautiful! I planted my first Iris a year ago. It looked like they sent up stems and were ready to bloom. Then it looked like the deer ate them.

@KingVelesI Gorgeous photo! In my opinion... Large scale or small scale homesteading are both beneficial and depends on who is doing it. Depends what the individual needs are. Personally, I don't want to discourage anyone from "homesteading" - whether it's 2 acres or 2,000.

Hard disagree. We've tried the "Homesteading Light" approach back in the very beginning of our journey, and we HATED it. You get a lot of the disadvantages of homesteading, without getting most of its perks. The land you have requires substantial amounts of work, but you don't have enough of it to generate a meaningful degree of self-sufficiency or profit, forcing you to keep your job. So now you're working both at your job and at home. Meaning, you have little time and energy to invest in your homestead, forcing you to rely on the work of others (on commerce) to keep it functioning. Now you're stuck buying feed, building materials, fertilizer, various "labor-saving" machines, etc., and you're starting to realize this "homesteading" stuff is just lots of work and expense for little to no gain — and who could blame you? By contrast, our quality of life improved DRAMATICALLY when we took the plunge, and decided to go all in — move to a large, isolated property, quit the city job, and drop our cost of living and farming to almost zero. Suddenly, we had tons of time and energy to invest into developing our own land, and while the first year was physically and mentally grueling, our motivation was sky-high from seeing our land, our self-sufficiency, and our ability to make money by raising livestock improve at a rapid pace. And, we got to be together ALL THE TIME, which is definitely the greatest perk of this lifestyle. Your mileage may vary, but "Homesteading Light" was a dead end for us. On the other hand, hardcore homesteading out in the sticks is where we've found our peace, our happiness, and our purpose. For folks who don't mind hard work and simple living, this is the very best lifestyle imaginable.

Don’t get into “homesteading” There are hundreds of accounts that tell you otherwise but unfortunately they’re wrong. You’ll do best by finding a place on a little land (~2 acres), keeping a small garden, staying close enough to town for good internet, and enjoying your peace.

@SNUpshaw It is a little harder in the summer because I go to bed super early, and it's still very light outside. But they like their treats or feed. It was easier to start on the weekends when I could stay up closer to dark.

@SNUpshaw I am on my first flock of chickens (2 1/2 years old). I had the same question at first. We got into a pattern. I yell "here chick chick" and take the feed bucket with me. They chase after me, right into their run. I fence them in... and I have an auto electric door on the coop.
