Honestly, this is not unusual for the area. The entire NW side of Chicago is built upon a filled-in swamp, and below street level there are plenty of areas where water still flows beneath, weakening the ground. A few years ago there was a huge hole that formed on Foster at Elston, and on my street a neighbor had a sinkhole form in front of his house, which the city had to take care of.
