The narrative around investment risk in most financial education is almost entirely focused on the risk of loss. How much can I lose. What is the downside scenario. How do I protect capital. This framing makes sense for most asset classes and most life stages. It is the wrong framing for early stage high growth environments. In a market where the median outcome for well-selected early positions is a 5 to 50x, the most expensive error is not the position that goes to zero. It is the position you never took because the risk of loss felt too high. A missed 20x on a position you could have taken is a larger dollar loss than a complete write-off on the same size position. This is not an argument for ignoring downside risk. It is an argument for calibrating your definition of risk to include opportunity cost, not just capital loss. The people who navigated the previous cycle best were not the ones with the tightest stop losses. They were the ones who identified opportunities with asymmetric upside and sized them appropriately, understanding that the most probable bad outcome was a total loss of a small position while the most probable good outcome was a return large enough to permanently change their financial trajectory.
