Funding & personnel cuts have ground essential reading and education research to a halt and upended a small division of the US Department of Education called the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). Contact your state legislator now! #StandUpforReadingResearch #SaveIES

I wonder if Trump realizes that banning Critical Race Theory (and DEI terms and policies) only further validates Critical Race Theory.

I hope follow up is done on damage caused by other programs and the deep damage done by claiming to be aligned to “new” science when the program most certainly is not Beyond thankful for the push to teach based on science/evidence. Horrified by how it’s playing out in reality

@Eduventuring04 @carriewoodwpg @MmeLockhartLDSB @smorrisey Agree! Districts need to provide their teachers with solid curriculum guidelines, assessment procedures, coaching supports, schedules, etc so that they can in turn focus on making the types of adjustments needed to support their students.

@DeborahLynam @carriewoodwpg @MmeLockhartLDSB @smorrisey I think also worth noting the work I do will make 💯 sense to me and the kids in front of me at the time I did the work. I’m still adjusting what I did last year to better fit a new class set of needs and some of what I did doesn’t work or isn’t necessary.

@DeborahLynam @carriewoodwpg @MmeLockhartLDSB @smorrisey Even with my experience and knowledge the work was unbearable. I eventually talked another school to team up with me so there were three people working to better align to best practice. Even then it still felt impossible

@Eduventuring04 @carriewoodwpg @MmeLockhartLDSB @smorrisey Having to do that level of work individually seems untenable… we can’t expect teachers to do this on their own. Not to mention, you’re experienced & knowledgeable… new teachers will have too much on their plates to take this on.

@Eduventuring04 @carriewoodwpg @MmeLockhartLDSB @smorrisey Yes, our state MTSS initiative works w/ district teams to focus on systems change work (guidelines, scheduling, data review mtgs, etc). We recently looked at other state initiatives & it doesn’t seem many include that type of work & districts aren’t doing it themselves.

@Eduventuring04 @carriewoodwpg @MmeLockhartLDSB @smorrisey Does your district have a leadership team that establishes curriculum guidelines? Packaged programs are tools, none are perfect, & often need supplements or clarifications to fit in the overall curriculum. You’ve done the work… is there a channel to share that work districtwide?

@carriewoodwpg @MmeLockhartLDSB @smorrisey Now I’m like a clown in the front of the room trying to gaslight kids into believing reading the same short passage five times in a week is worth their time and dignity. It’s wild

It’s Dyslexia Awareness Month and it’s important to understand how dyslexia and adult literacy are uniquely linked. We invited our member program @NeuhausEdCtr to write a guest blog on the topic and the facts everyone should know. Take a look: hubs.la/Q02TH89v0

The use of the death penalty in the United States is one of the ugliest stains on our broken criminal justice system. It is disproportionately imposed against poor people and people of color. We must abolish it once and for all.
