A 17-year-old final-year student of Mfantsipim Senior High School in Cape Coast, Emmanuel Arthur, has died by suicide, according to the Central Regional Police Command.
The deceased was found in an uncompleted building at Ola North in Cape Coast after a report was made by a carpenter working at the site. Police officers who responded to the scene on June 11, 2026, discovered the student’s remains.

A JoyNews Research analysis has revealed growing concern over the safety and well-being of students in Ghana’s public universities, with at least 13 students reportedly dying from non-natural causes since 2024.
The report indicates that the deaths, which include road accidents, suicides, drownings, falls and violent attacks, have occurred across major institutions such as the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has resigned from Ghana’s Council of State, bringing her tenure on the country’s highest presidential advisory body to an end.
Akuffo, who served as Chief Justice from 2017 to 2020, is reported to have submitted her resignation in 2025. She has since been absent from Council of State meetings, including a recent session held three days ago where her seat remained vacant. Neither Akuffo nor the Presidency has publicly commented on the resignation or the reasons behind it.
Her exit comes after a period in which she took a notable stance during a high-profile judicial controversy involving suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. In April 2025, during a Council of State vote on whether a prima facie case had been established for her removal, 30 of the 31 members supported the motion, while Akuffo abstained.
Following that development, she later appeared before an Article 146 committee at the request of the suspended Chief Justice to testify in her defence. In a September 2025 interview, Akuffo criticised the proceedings, describing them as unfair and warning that they risked undermining confidence in the judiciary. Her comments triggered public debate and criticism from various quarters.
The Council of State (Ghana) is a constitutional body mandated to advise the President on matters of national importance. Her resignation marks a notable departure from the advisory body during a sensitive period in Ghana’s judicial and political landscape.
