A fine example of empirical research informing policy. Analysis of CPS and other data suggests that a lot of human capital developed on the job is stranded when so many employers screen out people w/o BAs. Congrats to @OpptyatWork @DebroyPapia @byron_auguste

I thank the House for a unanimous vote on my FIRST bill (HB 2225). It “tears the paper ceiling” on applicants for state jobs who may not have a 4-year degree but who have skills through alternative routes (STARS). “If you can DO the job, you can GET the job.”—@OpptyatWork

Raising awareness of the costs and injustices of stranding the human capital of workers w/o college degrees is big deal and a huge credit to @byron_auguste and the @OpptyatWork team, including @DebroyPapia. Congratulations!

.@nytimes applauds PA, MD, UT Govs replacing college degree screen w/skills+experience. Cites @OpptyatWork research. Quotes me: if employers lack a STARs talent strategy “they don’t have a talent strategy, they only have half a talent strategy.” nytimes.com/2023/01/28/opi… #HireSTARs

Check out the latest research from our friends at @OpptyatWork on Black workers who are Skilled Through Alternative Routes (STARs) to learn where Black talent currently stands and how we can move forward. #BlackSTARs 🧵Read this thread for some highlights from the report!

65% of Black workers are Skilled Through Alternative Routes. Our latest #BlackSTARs research, presented in partnership with @OneTen shows the limited career opportunities experienced by Black STARs and points to pathways for mobility. Learn more: opportunityatwork.org/our-solutions/…

STARs were systematically excluded for 20 years from precisely the pathways that offer trajectories to the middle class, despite having skills to do the work. We can make deliberate choices to change that. Thanks @SteveLohr for covering this important work from us @OpptyatWork.

Signs of change recently, but still a corporate culture that too often neglects workers with skills but not four-year college degrees. New research from @OpptyatWork on the problem and barriers. nytimes.com/2022/01/14/bus…

This chorus of voices is so important. This piece by @byron_auguste continues to push everyone to focus on wages--people are low wage. The problem is their wage. Please stop with the low skill.
Opportunity@Work@OpptyatWork

Here's a preview: "Undervaluing low-wage work as “low-skill” is often untrue and unfair, but it also undermines our economic future." Read more from @byron_auguste's @Forbes op-ed: forbes.com/sites/byronaug… cc: #AtlanticFutureEcon @AnnieLowrey @MaryKayHenry
