I've just spent some time looking into it. Bruno’s only averaging about 0.68 shots on target per 90 in the league this season, which doesn’t exactly scream value at first glance. But a lot of that comes down to how he was being used earlier on. Under Amorim he was stuck way deeper than you’d want one of your best attackers, doing a lot more defensive work in midfield. Since Carrick’s come in and pushed him higher, you can see the difference straight away. He’s getting involved in better areas and actually backing himself to shoot again. Last weekend at the Emirates he had three shots in the 3-2 win. He didn’t manage any on target, and over his last five league games he’s had eight shots with only one testing the keeper. Context does matter though, as this data only includes two matches under Carrick, both against top opposition in Man City and Arsenal. Man Utd will expect to have more of the ball against Fulham, who have conceded 4.36 shots on target per away game this season. Fernandes’ shot volume and advanced positioning makes me fancy his chances of getting a shot on target against Fulham, but I can understand if you’re put off by his recent stats.
