IU has captured not only Byun Woo-seok but also the viewers through her role in Perfect Crown. The MBC Friday-Saturday drama Perfect Crown, which premiered on the 10th, is set in a 21st-century constitutional monarchy South Korea. It depicts the romance between a chaebol heiress who has everything but is merely a commoner by status (making her irritable), and a king’s son who can have nothing despite his royal blood. In the drama, IU plays Seong Hui-ju, the second daughter of the Castle Group, who is arranged to marry Ian Grand Prince (played by Byun Woo-seok). Seong Hui-ju is what’s commonly called a “disliked” or “unlikable” character. She is neurotic, prioritizes only her own feelings, and acts calculatively, always putting her own interests first. These aspects of her personality are fully displayed in the show. IU delivers even the character’s most annoying lines in a way that feels lovable to the audience. She boldly expresses all sorts of negative emotions—irritation, jealousy, stubbornness, and competitiveness—but portrays them so transparently and honestly that viewers can empathize, recognizing them as feelings everyone has experienced at some point. As IU herself mentioned, “This is the first time I’ve acted so openly and aggressively,” despite the character having many unlikable elements, IU skillfully brings her to life with masterful facial expressions and gestures, making the role deliciously entertaining. Perfect Crown has been one of the most anticipated dramas since news broke last year that IU was cast as the female lead. With Byun Woo-seok, who achieved syndrome-level popularity with Lovely Runner, starring in his next project, it naturally drew massive public attention. At the same time, there was strong anticipation for IU’s acting transformation. IU has fulfilled those expectations in just four episodes.
