In a tomb packed with gold, the single most precious object buried with the boy king was a plain dark knife. Its blade was iron, and in his world iron was rarer than gold, because the only way to get any was to wait for a rock to fall out of the sky. Tutankhamun died as a teenager, more than a century before anyone in his part of the world figured out how to pull iron out of ordinary rock. That trick, called smelting, needs a furious, steady heat they had not mastered yet. So the only iron around had arrived from space, locked inside meteorites, and a whole blade made of it was almost unheard of. For nearly a hundred years after the tomb was found, no one could prove where the metal came from without damaging the priceless blade. Then in 2016 an Italian team aimed an X-ray gun at it and read off its ingredients without leaving a scratch. Iron pulled from the ground is barely 4 percent nickel. This blade was almost 11 percent, with a little cobalt mixed in, the exact recipe you only find in iron that formed out in space. It even matched a particular meteorite found years earlier near Egypt's coast. A second team, six years later, spotted something the first had walked past. Locked in the metal was a faint criss-cross pattern in the crystals, along with tiny dark specks of a mineral found in meteorites, the kind of delicate detail that vanishes the instant iron gets melted. Since it had survived, the blade must have been shaped the slow way, hammered at a heat too low to melt it. The gems on its golden handle gave away something else. They were glued on with a paste that craftsmen used in a kingdom called Mitanni, in what is now Turkey, but that Egypt would not pick up for another thousand years. There is even a paper trail: a clay letter from the royal archives, written 3,400 years ago, describes the king of Mitanni sending an iron dagger with a gold handle to Tut's grandfather as a wedding gift. The teenager was most likely buried with a hand-me-down that had come from abroad, beaten into shape from a rock that fell out of the sky. The Egyptians had half-guessed all of this long before any X-ray. Their word for iron was written as a picture of the sky holding a bowl of water, and around Tut's lifetime they began calling the metal, in plain words, the iron of the sky. They believed it was something the gods let drop to Earth, which is exactly what made it fit to arm a king for the journey into the next life. The dagger is on display again now, beside the golden mask, in the giant new museum that opened by the pyramids last November. The scientists only confirmed the part the Egyptians had written down more than 3,000 years earlier.

Morbius became such a meme that people kept joking it was secretly the biggest movie ever. Sony put it back into over 1,000 theaters. It bombed again. The internet memed a movie into failing twice.

@Semoahui @LostMemeArchive That's how it usually works, actually. Remember a couple years ago when Nintendo shut down the Wii U and 3DS servers? People did the same thing there, too

@LostMemeArchive So they didn't "shut down the servers", they shut down connecting to them. Which is... odd. Very amateurish, but not surprising for Xbox.

When Microsoft shut down the original Xbox Live servers, a small group of Halo 2 players found a loophole. If they stayed logged in, they could keep playing. They kept Halo 2 alive for 26 extra days, until the final player was eventually disconnected.

California lawmakers are moving to exempt most Linux distributions from the state’s upcoming age-verification law after backlash from the open-source community. The original law would require operating systems to verify a user’s age during setup and share that information with apps through a built-in system API. Because the wording was broad, many developers believed it could apply to Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora. That led to backlash from developers, who said the rules would be hard for volunteer-run open-source projects to follow. In response, lawmakers introduced changes narrowing the law’s scope and likely exempting most Linux distributions.
