I told my group ride I was done buying cycling kit. They laughed.
"Wait for the winter sales," they said. "You'll crack."
That was January. I haven't bought a single jersey since.
Here's why I reached breaking point.
I counted my kit. 47 jerseys. 23 bibs. €3,000 spent last year alone. On plastic clothes. To "save the environment" by not driving.
The math wasn't adding up.
Then I went climbing with an old friend.
His entire gear wardrobe had just a few items - one sun-destroyed shirt, ancient approach shoes, a chalk bag from 2012 & a puffer jacket with duct tape on it.
Everything faded to nothing.
At the wall, people trusted him immediately. The wear told his story.
Back at the group ride, someone showed up in a 2018 jersey. "Time for an upgrade, mate?"
That's when it clicked.
We've built a culture where experience is something you buy, not something you earn.
Cycling has become fast fashion, and we're too deep in to see it.
Patagonia tells customers "Don't buy this jacket." They'll repair your gear forever. Because real outdoor culture understands: the best gear is the gear that lasts.
Cycling? We get "limited drops" and "heritage colorways." Artificial scarcity.
Supreme for middle-aged men. Making us collect jerseys like sneakers while pretending we're athletes.
Every brand preaches sustainability while pushing quarterly collections.
Every rider talks environment while drowning in polyester.
The faded jersey you're embarrassed to wear? It's proof you actually ride.
That pristine kit collection? It's proof you shop.
In every other outdoor sport, worn gear equals credibility.
In cycling, it means you're not "serious about the sport."
We've inverted reality.
Nine months into my no-buy experiment, here's what I've learned
My old kit works fine.
The "revolutionary fabric technology" was marketing.
The "essential" winter jacket wasn't essential.
But something else happened.
I started noticing who actually rides versus who collects.
The fast guys? Faded kit.
The Instagram cyclists? Walking catalogs.
The most radical thing you can do in cycling?
Wear your shit out.
Make "destroyed" the new "pro."
Because right now, we're environmentalists in our Strava bios and fast fashion addicts in our closets.
The climbing world figured this out decades ago. When will cycling?

@sscottpga Strange that two gentlemen of the sport, two top class golfers, one outstanding multiple major champion and one first class broadcaster would have a disagreement of this nature?
