Breaking: Is War Looming Between China and the Philippines? Statement by the Chinese Foreign Ministry Regarding the Philippines' Designation of So-Called "Territorial Sea Baselines" Around China's Huangyan Dao The Philippines' designation of so-called "territorial sea baselines" around China's Huangyan Dao (Scarborough Shoal) constitutes a serious infringement upon China's territorial sovereignty and a grave violation of international law, including the UN Charter and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); such actions are illegal and invalid. China firmly opposes and categorically rejects this move. Huangyan Dao is China's inherent territory. China possesses indisputable sovereignty over Huangyan Dao and its adjacent waters, as well as sovereign rights and jurisdiction over the relevant maritime areas. China has continuously, peacefully, and effectively exercised sovereignty and jurisdiction over Huangyan Dao. The territorial scope of the Philippines has been defined by a series of international treaties, none of which include Huangyan Dao. There is no basis in international law for the Philippines' illegal territorial claims over China's Huangyan Dao. By unilaterally initiating the "South China Sea arbitration," the Philippines violated fundamental principles of international law—such as *pacta sunt servanda* (agreements must be kept) and the doctrine of estoppel—as well as international law including UNCLOS, and breached bilateral agreements between China and the Philippines and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). The so-called "award" is illegal, invalid, and non-binding. China neither accepts nor recognizes the "award" and opposes and rejects any claims or actions based upon it. Under the banner of UNCLOS, the Philippines promulgated a so-called "Maritime Zones Act," illegally incorporating China's Huangyan Dao, the majority of the Nansha Islands (Spratly Islands) and their features, and relevant waters into its own maritime zones. It also attempted to solidify the illegal "South China Sea arbitration award" through domestic legislation. These actions seriously infringe upon China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea and are illegal and invalid. China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests regarding Huangyan Dao and the Nansha Islands remain unaffected by the so-called "Maritime Zones Act" under any circumstances. For some time, the Philippines has frequently engaged in provocations and stirred up trouble in the waters of Huangyan Dao, while also engaging in inflammatory publicity and hype. These actions infringe upon China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, escalate maritime tensions, and undermine peace and stability in the South China Sea. China demands that the Philippines earnestly respect China's territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests, and refrain from taking any infringing or provocative actions at Huangyan Island; otherwise, China will respond resolutely. Analysis: The Philippines has lost its sense of reason, swayed by U.S. incitement, domestic political needs, and extreme nationalism. July 20: The Philippine warship illegally grounded at Ren'ai Reef deployed two inflatable boats; personnel on board rammed a Chinese Coast Guard patrol vessel while brandishing weapons. July 23: Two Philippine government vessels intruded into the waters under China's jurisdiction at Huangyan Island and were driven away by Chinese Coast Guard water cannons. July 24: The Philippines organized seven government vessels, three coast guard ships, and a large number of fishing boats to illegally gather at Huangyan Island; they were blocked from entering the territorial sea by nine Chinese Coast Guard ships. July 29: The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs submitted nautical charts and geographic coordinates related to Huangyan Island to the United Nations. July 30: China's Southern Theater Command organized naval and air forces to conduct combat readiness patrols around Huangyan Island; assets deployed included Type 054B frigates, Y-9 anti-submarine aircraft, and H-6K strategic bombers. Currently, the Philippines is simultaneously pushing on three fronts—Ren'ai Reef, Huangyan Island, and Zhongye Island—employing a combined strategy of "government vessels clearing the path, fishing boats or small craft staging collisions, media coverage to hype the situation, and playing the victim in public opinion afterward." By deliberately fabricating false narratives to probe and provoke China, the Philippines attempts to project an image of a "bullied" victim and seize the opportunity to draw in external forces.

Something that truly baffles me is the trend in Taiwan of shooting some Airsofts as a visible sign of how committed you are to defending Taiwan. Ahem.
