#WindrushDay Anniversary, June 22nd 1948 - 22nd June 2026. The Great British colonial years ended after almost 400 years of British rule of overseas shores and, by default, broadened the British family of Subjects from our four nations towards an entire UK cohort of colonies who were meant to be equal in status as Citizens & Subject of the Empire, as many nations entered a new relationship with our UK as members of the British Commonwealth. What followed was the advent of migration from the colonies and early years' former colonies to the Mother nation, post-WW2, to help regenerate our post-war Britain. Yet there were systemic lapses and failures in paper trails and the evidencing of rights for the freely landed. As our UK's interests transitioned towards the EU in the early 1970s, much of the historical significance and contributions of the Windrush years were dissolved into yet another part of forgotten history. Although the Windrush years started with the docking of the HMT Windrush at Tilbury, it was the beginning of a new chapter of Colonial and early Commonwealth migration. The Windrush legacy and the scandal that followed did not end with the family of Caribbean nations, it encompassed and impacted many Commonwealth nations into the early 1970s and late 1980s. The legacy of Windrush South Asia and Windrush Africa as a follow-on from the arrival of British Subjects from the British Caribbean islands on 22nd June 1948, is a history sewn within a greater history of our nation. The key questions that followed are the right to belong, integration and historical acknowledgement. As many voices are getting heard, there are many other voices dying in the backwaters of isolation and exclusion, and this has been continuing for some 50 years on into the 21st Century.
