Until a child feels safe and secure in their environment they won’t be learning much. Maybe we should focus on that rather than ticking a register to say they are there (physically, if not emotionally)? #MentalHealthMatters 💜

@garethkthomas 100% agree! Unfortunately it depends on what the priorities of a particular school or staff member are. We are seeing more punishments/tick boxes to advance to pex students who would relish that connection as an alternative. We see the impact of this and its not positive 💔

Many young people wish they were able to attend ‘just like everyone else’ to have those special moments and experiences. Instead left with guilt, sadness and anger at themselves for being unable to ‘just do it’… @Define_Fine_PS 💔

And this is coming from someone who actually wanted to be at school. I didn’t want to be homeschooled or to be away from my friends. I just wanted the panic to go. Unfortunately, the environment was too overwhelming and the anxiety around grades too much. 3/5

Using the term ‘homeschooling’ screams lack of understanding of learning without school and the impact of the CWSBill. The legal term is ‘Elective Home Education’ and someone like @bevcraig should be aware of that when giving evidence that concerns home educators @CommonsEd

Another school, another pupil denied access to an EHC needs assessment. The reason? School state pupil is academically able. Where is that pupil now? Attendance almost non existent! Academic ability is not an indicator of SEN, never was, never will be!!

A brilliant interview, thanks @Tamsin_J_Ford and @tes… “the important thing is to try and leverage strengths within the individual, family and school to get a virtuous cycle going” 🙏🏼💜 #MentalHealthMatters #bullying #SuicidePrevention #SEND #InclusionMatters

What you really need to tackle pupil absence is to work together as a team: the school, the parents and the local authority, says @Tamsin_J_Ford buff.ly/4gmVeIb

@bphillipsonMP will you be sitting down with organisations representing families currently experiencing the current education system? Especially those with children unable to engage and/or attend regularly? Please include us and @Define_Fine_PS if at all possible 💜🙏🏼
Bridget Phillipson@bphillipsonMP

I sat down with @tes to discuss my first two months as Secretary of State for Education. We inherited a £22bn black hole in the public finances, and a societal black hole too. Our country voted for change, so we're getting on with fixing the foundations. tes.com/magazine/analy…
