Here’s a friendly reminder that, even though the news rn is scary and depressing, the answer should almost never be to “not watch because it makes [me] sad.” If the news upsets you, go out and try to change the world it reports. Ignorance is not bliss. #ignoranceisirresponsible

Translation: If he was a different character, he wouldn't be a beloved character. I respect what you're trying to say, but this argument falls flat. Art the Clown is beloved BECAUSE he's Art the Clown. There are legit critiques of "Terrifier", but this doesn't make much sense

They’re gonna burn me at the stake for this but if he wasn’t in a clown costume and making silly faces he wouldn’t be a beloved character. If he looked and acted like a regular guy people would see him as a disgusting villain who takes pleasure in torturing women.

YES! The movie would be uninteresting if all it had going for it was “Bear is the real villain.” Yeah, he sucks, but what makes "Obsession" magnificent is how Bear is not the source of the problem. The source is the repression of emotional truth and fear of vulnerability.
Samantha Lux@_samanthalux

“Obsession” perfectly illustrated that the patriarchy teaching men to repress their feelings and not be vulnerable, and resort to control over genuine love, imprisons them to a life of loveless misery. 10/10

@zeiner_chase Exactly! Sure, she may not have disclosed her relationship with Ian, but she was absolutely the healthiest communicator of the group. She was the one who was the most vulnerable and most open. Her possession absolutely opened the floodgates of these characters to just devolve.

“Bear is the real villain of "Obsession".” - No sh**. Obviously. “The whole film could have been avoided if this friend group weren’t all encouraging each others pathological refusal to be open and vulnerable.” - Now THIS is interesting discourse!

@LauraRbnsn His punishment for his violation of Nikki’s autonomy is the explicit text of the film. It’s not interesting, to me, to interrogate it. What is interesting is interrogating how his badness and sin was encouraged/enabled by the wider generational systems he inhabits. 2/2

@LauraRbnsn I think Bear’s badness comes from lack of care. Sure, he didn’t INTEND to harm Nikki, but he didn’t exactly care for her well-being until he was harmed. The reason why discussions of Bear’s badness bore me is because the film lays out how bad he is and punishes him for it. 1/2

@LauraRbnsn I think this is part of what the film is saying! Sarah’s less guilty of this than Ian/Bear, but all of these Gen-Zers are steeped in fear of looking cringe or being vulnerable that it exacerbates really toxic behavior. This film is steeped in Gen-Z fears of vulnerability!

@DelGoada Sarah actually strikes me as a lot like Bear in that she is extremely reluctant to go after what she wants. Instead of telling Bear how she feels she tells Ian things Nikki told her knowing that Ian will repeat them.

No, I just find it morally repugnant to outsource your thinking to a plagiarism generator. If you’re not willing to use your brain to get a college education, step aside and let someone else who does want it to take your place.
Tim Gill@timgill924

Let’s be honest. All these people upset about college students using AI are just jealous they didn’t have it when they were in college. They just want them to suffer like they did. It’s an old story: “Well if I suffered, they should too.” It’s also a morally repugnant position.

I’m gonna hold your hand when I say this: Those movies were also about deeper themes than people getting chased by monsters. You just didn’t pay attention.
