Superheroes are sentinels of the city. Indeed, Scott Bukatman argues #GoldenAge superheroes “encapsulated & embodied the same utopian aspirations of modernity as the cities themselves.” They are also designed to survive the real & symbolic dangers of modern urban existence. 1/12

The #GoldenAge of superhero comics is generally thought to begin with Superman’s debut in Action Comics #1 (1938) and last until the postwar adoption of the Comics Code (1954). It was a time of innovation & upheaval that’s not easily summarized–but we’ll try! 1/8 #ComicsStudies

Even if you’ve never read a #Bone comic, the structural innovations that Smith developed in telling (and selling) his story have been industry-defining, and thus the way Bone is structured has forever altered the way that most comics stories are now developed. #ComicsStudies 1/9

As previously argued, #Bone exists within a rich tradition of high fantasy, but the specific context of Smith’s visual articulation of the valley and its denizens through the lexicon of comics art offers something new and compelling to a longstanding and much-loved genre. 1/12
